After cleaning out thoroughly, I cut in a cat door.
Floor was not smooth so I laid down a layer of insulated foam board inside. Because this was going into a covered area, I added blankets on top of the foam board. I separated it from the ground by having the cooler sit on a piece of foam board.
Finally, I added about 20 watts of tiny incandescent Christmas lights to the ceiling as a heater. to insure the car used it (he was afraid of people), I propped the door and created a sort of tunnel into it using blankets around the entrance. The colder it got, the more blankets I added on top of the cooler.
Cat survived -20 below in that thing- layng on his back like someone in a tanning bed.
He's not in there anymore, he eventually became my pet.
Coolers have a shell that is just about indestructible. It's better insulation than most people have in their own home. I recommend this, although you have to vary what's inside based on the situation.
