Dont buy this. I bought it with the same spec, and the thing is slow. And I am an IT person. 8 gb ram, and slow ssd is killing it. I wish I had the 16/512 version to test if the slows and lags are because of that.
Correctamundo. The m2 with 8gb and 256gb is the one config that I seriously recommend avoiding. They went from a 2 nand chip ssd to 1 chip and it halved the speed.

Trying to page to that drive with 8gb of ram isn't a good thing.

M1 with the faster drive? Good. M2 with 512? Good. M3+ also good since they went with a non crappy ssd. Any of them with 16gb is also good.

But that's the trap. You see these $650-830 ones and the next thing you know you're +$400 for the upgrades.

This finally explains why some people with m2 8gb complain about speed problems, but lots of m1/m3 people don't have the same problem even with same 8gb of ram. Thanks for the explanation!

Is that the only one with the slower SSD?
Yes the M2 base has the single nand chip, but the M3 has dual nand chips

Which makes absolutely zero difference for anyone using a $800 laptop. Show us where your workflow/experience is slowed down because of this.
But why compromise if not needed..

I have about 30-50 tabs open in chrome always. So, when I wake the laptop from sleep, and start browsing, everything is slow

On the contrary, why spend more if you won't take advantage of it?

Apple made a "product decision" with regards to the base M2 SSD. We don't know if it was cost, parts availability, etc. If it's really a "compromise" for ya, just buy something different.

That slowness has nothing to do with SSD speed. RAM, maybe.

I would never buy a computer with 8GB of RAM. Pretty soon that's probably not even going to a lot for iPhones.

With all do respect...for the needs of the average person, they won't notice the difference... Appreciate you informing on the technical side, yet your average joe who's running a few chrome tabs, a game here and there won't see that difference...that 256ssd and 8gb of unified memory is plenty! Here's comes the down voting lol

So it's not the right spec *for you*. I have the 16/512 and it's great. VMs, etc with no issues. Wife does simple office stuff on her 8/256 and it meets her needs. Don't speak for everyone on this. It's plenty fast.
You don't need this for simple office stuff. it's ridiculously overpriced.
