No. You port your real number to google voice and then purchase any mvno deal there is at any time, get a new fake number from them when activating and set google voice to forward your calls to that number. You use your regular dialer or goigle voice dialer on your phone. Done and you never have to deal with porting nonsense again and can take advantage of mvno deals at any time.
This is not true - it's better than before but I've came across several institutions where it didn't work because they don't accept voip numbers.
It's not a stop gap, I have used GV as my main number for more than ten years now. I don't need to worry about or deal with the customer service about port-in or port-out my number while taking full advantage of whatever introductory promotional rates various wireless providers have been offering. I just got a new number everytime and forward the calls to my main number to whatever new numbers I got. Have disposable numbers from time to time can also come in handy when you don't have to give someone or some place your permanent main number.

Why in the world would you transfer your number anywhere other than google voice.

This makes no sense. The number has to eventually make its way onto a carrier or MVNO, especially if you want to use iMessage... GV is just the stop gap.

You can use iMessage with just an email address… how do you think ppl use it on iPad?

Gv does have issues with some banks and other companies that do not allow for voip/landline numbers for 2FA.

This sounds like a logistical nightmare to me.

When GV first started, 2FA using Google number might be an issue, but now, most of the places accept GV. Haven't had that issue for quite some time.

Not a logistical nightmare, everything is set in GV app now. Take 5 second each time.

That's exactly what I have been doing for years, probably saving me hundreds if not thousands in monthly mobile bills up to this point.
