There's actually a trick (and it works for any of these plastic type shoes. Crocs etc.) where you heat the shoes up and they can be stretched. I have a high instep so I do it to all of my shoes/slides of this type otherwise I wouldn't be able to wear them. Basically I use a heat gun to get them hot (don't melt them!) with something in them to hold the shape (I use a shoe stretcher). When they're hot, I put them on (wearing socks so I don't burn myself) until they are cool and they are custom fitted to my feet. The downside of this hack is that if you leave those kinds of shoes in the sun (or car or somewhere hot) they will deform and shrink (if they are modified or not).
