my local lowes has been trying to get rid of these for one dollar since xmas eve.
These sound great in theory. But in reality, I've rarely found holiday/yard lights that fit these properly. There seems to always be a reason I can't fit my connections into these things.
If you have a 3D printer, you can make these. Check a 3D printer site, like thingiverse, for "12 gauge extension cord cover." I'm sure there are a lot of different cover types to find, make your own or bookmark to make later.

I've never had an issue with two individual cords connected together causing issues. I did have a couple ground fault trips last year with a 3 plug extension cord and the three individual light sets off it but this wouldn't help with that. Also, not water proof? I can't think of a worse situation than having two plugs inside a pod of water after a rain storm. They specifically need to dry out.

I've had good luck tying plastic bags around mine too keep out rain drizzle and morning dew, just for temporary use.

Last time I tried these, they seemed to work for 1 winter, but the next winter, when i tried to close them, they were brittle and the hinge cracked.

In an ironic twist for a "safety" product, I've recently been thinking about using one of these with zip tie strain reliefs on a cord with a split in the jacket. I know electrical tape won't stay too long, and the snagging hazard posed by a big plastic box isn't particularly subtle or sneaky. Perfect timing.

No, this cord doesn't get rolled up and stored, it's for trickle chargers.

Try using self healing silicone tape- perfect for this application.

It looks like these protect the connection, but wouldn't prevent the cords from pulling apart, correct?
i have a different brand but similar, they clamp shut pretty tight and it tapers towards the two ends where the cord comes out so it would be difficult if not impossible to pull them apart when shut. There is not a lot of room to move inside, which is also why it can be difficult to fit some plugs inside these.

Literally everytime I used this product, it eventually trapped and accumulated water inside.

I've never used one of these and definitely left items plugged in out in the yard and such. If rain did somehow short an extension connection, would it just trip the breaker?

The box isn't even water proof, so it's likely to accumulate water, which is less ideal than simply letting the connection periodically get rained on.

Looks to me a solution in search of a problem.
Yeah just putting a cover over the connection would offer nearly the same level of protection, possibly better by avoiding the issue you mentioned.

Or you can just get one of these and drill a few holes on the bottom and tape over them if you don't want the holes anymore.

At Lowe's, the closest I've found is this one [lowes.com], priced at $6.58. I do understand local stores may have different/lower prices (YMMV). I once bought a bunch of roofing materials super cheap at one Lowe's and the next closest Lowe's was selling them at full price and wouldn't price match.
it's this one

i finally got one yesterday

anouther great use for these is if you have an outside ethernet cable coupled (2 lines joined together). this will adjust to fit over the coupler and jacks on both ends of the coupler.
