They do this because you never really know how the weight of the vehicle is going to be distributed between the stands. It might be 50/50 or 75/25 or ???.

Stands that are advertised as meeting those standards would individually be rated to carry half the stated capacity.
So in this case, 2 tons = 4000 lbs, or 1 ton/2000 lbs each.
Practically speaking, these stands should support an average vehicle, but it's still important to understand what governs the ratings, and what they actually mean, to have the full picture.

Alternatively, the off brand "Maasdam" used to be $20 for a pair that were 3 ton capacity that looked very similar to this. Not sure when and if they'll go back down

That said, I went with jackpoint jackstands for my Chevy Bolt. Made in USA, and Super nice to be able to lift the car and place a jackstand at the same place... But cost me $500 for a pair and I spent months on the waitlist.
