2 tons is 4k pounds. The average full size sedan has a curb weight of 3200-3800lbs. Most people working on a car will use 1 stand to support 1 wheel; not an entire axle. If this is used on a single wheel on the front of a front wheel drive vehicle, it would be supporting ~800-1200lbs, well into the safe zone for a 2 ton stand. If you need bigger, buy bigger. For the average shade tree mechanic, this will work just fine.

The ASME PASE jack stand standards say:"Maximum load capacity per matched pair shall not exceed the rated capacity of the individual stand"That means that each individual stand in this set rated at 2-tons should be able to hold 2 tons (4000lbs) by itself.

They do this because you never really know how the weight of the vehicle is going to be distributed between the stands. It might be 50/50 or 75/25 or ???.

A lot of people don't seem to realize a lot of these ratings mean that risk of failure begins around double the rating and catastrophic failure is imminent at triple the rating. So realistically even 1 of these could theoretically safely hold your entire small car off the ground ( if you could somehow balance it and obviously it's not recommend you attempt this)

What you should really be worried about is tipping and using these on uneven surfaces

The harbor freight Daytona 3 ton can be had for $30 when it goes on coupon. It has a safety key which makes it damn near impossible for the quick release lever to accidentally release and drop the car.

Nope... Go look at the ones HF makes now. They really got burned on the recall, so they responded by making, arguably, best in class jackstands.

That said, I went with jackpoint jackstands for my Chevy Bolt. Made in USA, and Super nice to be able to lift the car and place a jackstand at the same place... But cost me $500 for a pair and I spent months on the waitlist.

Home Depot has 3-ton jackstands with locking pins for under $30 regular price. No need to wait for Harbor Freight coupons or worry about their dodgy quality control (which has already resulted in at least two safety recalls).

Wait...1 stand per axle? I'm not a mechanic, but I never would've even considered that an option. That's some serious faith in their seesaw skills.
