You got lucky. I ordered six of these 12TB drives and two were DOA. They were quickly replaced though, so goharddrive provided good service.

I've had really good luck with Go hard drive. I would only buy one of these used Enterprise drives from either go hard drives or server parts deals. Out of five drives, none of them have been bad yet. And both of these companies package the drives very well. To me. theres a big difference between these two companies and buying used hard drives in general off of eBay. I've had some horrible experiences buying 4tb used Enterprise drives, over 50% have been junk. But I trust these and the warranty that helps mitigate the risk.

What do people use these large hard drives for? NAS? I know people usually setup Synology servers at home. I currently have a cheap NAS setup with a RPi with OpenMediaVault that doubles as a Plex server. I was thinking about revamping the whole setup with a better PC (mini PC with Intel N100) and larger drives. But I don't know if it makes more sense to have a Synology device. The CPUs on those are weaker so should I buy a mini PC and can I run it alongside the Synology server or should I just get a 2 drive USB docker? Current drive attached to RPi is a 5tb portable WD 2.5" drive.

I want something that can be used to sync my phone's photos and have all my media files for Plex. It should be able to handle 4k transcoding too. Along with file sharing for home network. But I also want some redundancy in place in case a drive fails.

That's a loaded question, with lots to consider. I suggest spending time on some NAS forums to understand the pros and cons of the various platforms.

I use this mini computer for one of my PLEX servers. I have two externally powered usb 3.0 8port hubs plugged into it with sixteen 2tb SSDs/M2 drives. Seems to run 4k well.

I also use a macmini with a similar drive setup. But I added in two western digital 16Tb red drives ( I kinda wonder if I should have used purple or gold drives, though..)

Audiobook and music servers. Surveillance system also.
You can also share files very easily with it.

My synology DS224+ does everything you just said. I run a 4K plex server off of it and backup our photos from phone. I have two of these 12TB drives from GoHardDrive on it in RAID1. Got them for $82 each and they work perfectly. A little noisy when they are backing up so I run backups at night when we're asleep.
