You got lucky. I ordered six of these 12TB drives and two were DOA. They were quickly replaced though, so goharddrive provided good service.
Put refurbished in title…

Edit: Thanks
I've had really good luck with Go hard drive. I would only buy one of these used Enterprise drives from either go hard drives or server parts deals. Out of five drives, none of them have been bad yet. And both of these companies package the drives very well. To me. theres a big difference between these two companies and buying used hard drives in general off of eBay. I've had some horrible experiences buying 4tb used Enterprise drives, over 50% have been junk. But I trust these and the warranty that helps mitigate the risk.

Questions to others who also got this UltraStar He12… does yours make noticeable platter sounds with the write heads? I got mine today and put it into my always-on NVR. It's not too loud, but I can hear it the writes easily. I've got UltraStar He10s in my NAS and they don't make a peep, but the NAS isn't always writing data like the NVR is.

I have He10s and you can do things with them that make them sound like hail on a tin roof. Generally, if they're performing a lot of seeks then the head actuators can be very loud. However, if they're just scanning or writing contiguously, they will be very quiet. I guess it's possible that if you have multiple concurrent scan/write operations then that could get loud. Another possibility is that the filesystem directory needs to be updated periodically during writes, which would cause head thrashing. I'm not an expert, so take this with a spoon of salt.

Any instructions on how to comprehensively test these drives when they arrive? Thanks in advance.

Anyone care to comment on this drive's compatibility with Lorex NVRs ? I recently bought the Seagate Exos X20 16TB (refurb) which work fine when connected to a PC, but the NVR was not able to format it (Yes I made sure there were no preexisting partitions on the disk before connecting it to the NVR)

What do people use these large hard drives for? NAS? I know people usually setup Synology servers at home. I currently have a cheap NAS setup with a RPi with OpenMediaVault that doubles as a Plex server. I was thinking about revamping the whole setup with a better PC (mini PC with Intel N100) and larger drives. But I don't know if it makes more sense to have a Synology device. The CPUs on those are weaker so should I buy a mini PC and can I run it alongside the Synology server or should I just get a 2 drive USB docker? Current drive attached to RPi is a 5tb portable WD 2.5" drive.

I want something that can be used to sync my phone's photos and have all my media files for Plex. It should be able to handle 4k transcoding too. Along with file sharing for home network. But I also want some redundancy in place in case a drive fails.
What is your budget? Perhaps build a workstation like me. PM me if you like

In case a drive fail then you have to go minimum raid 5. And when you are doing raids, the big 3 right now are synology, QNAP and ASUS. In the same order with the same prices you get this result:
Synology = software 10, hardware 5 (they give you the least amount of hardware ouf of the 3).
QNAP = Software 7, hardware 7 (this is a balance option).
ASUS = Software = 5, hardware = 9 (they give you the most hardware out of the group).

For today's world I like my NAS to have SSD for the OS/cache so it speeds it up. you have to remember these CPU in the NAS are trash, they need all the help they can get.
Synology has moved toward AMD for their latest round of product with the exception of the 423+, what that means is that you get no GPU transcode for plex. QNAP and ASUS is ok, in fact they even advertise about GPU transcoding on their NAS.

I don't recommend anything else besides these 3 company, it's just too much trouble. You can also do xpenology but it's a lot of work and trouble shooting hardware/software. USB drive on a small PC is also a no no for me. I had so many drives that got killed because USB is being stupid. I'm a cheap bastard and still fork up the money to get a QNAP. The QNAP 664 and 653D is a good choice for a balance setup with 6 drives. I would not go with any 2 drives unit, and 4 drive is the minimum. 6 is still decently price but once you step into the 8-10 bays it gets really expensive.

Do not buy older NAS, they have slower CPU/connection which isn't suitable for today's world. And people still ask an arm and leg for them. I got someone offering a 1812 synology for 500 bucks. Sure it's got 8 bays but that thing was 12 years old, it is super low.

Agree with most of this, not this last paragraph. I bought a used Synology ds415+ for $259 and it has worked beautifully for me. My main nass is a Synology ds418 play, and runs beautifully and transcodes Plex beautifully. Last time I checked eBay there was a guy selling one of these for 350 bucks which I think is a pretty fair price. The one thing I would caution with older Nas units is the lack of updates after a certain point. If I were buying a used Synology Nas, I would try to limit my range to something that can run DSM 7.2., which generally means models made in 2018 or later.
Personally, in your situation I would get an inexpensive. Synology Nas for the simplicity and the features like hyper backup and active backup for business, and get $150 mini PC with an n100 to have fun with docker and your containers. and if you get the mini PC, you don't have to worry about which processor the Nas is using because you can run Plex off the mini PC in the n100 will be great. just let the Nas be the nas and map your Plex server to a shared folder on your Nas.

I just bought a Ugreen 6 bay NAS on Kickstarter for $650. The hardware is phenomenal and comes with an I5 11th Gen processor. Software is like maybe a 2 right now, but am thinking of loading unraid or one of those. Will be looking for drives after the NAS arrives. Am keeping up with these threads right now so I know what is available.

I'm 0-2 with mine. First one was fine until I started to copy files to it. I changed the drive letter to F. Started copying it worked for about 30 minutes and then it threw an I/o error. After that the drive wasn't recognized by my pc. After a reboot the drive letter was changed to D. And anything I try to copy throws the same error and won't even copy small files.
The second one would not initialize. I even changed enclosures and got the same problem. In windows when given the option of MBR or GPT it errors out after choosing. I'm currently running minitool partition wizard on it.
I guess I'll get to see how supportive their customer support is.

Ordered one, system doesn't see it. Doesn't show up in BIOS, device manager or disk management. First time buying a refurbished hard drive, normally buy new. Think I'll avoid refurbished hard drives from now on.
