Not the same thing and they don't always have the same wires. Each NEMA 5-15 duplex receptacle is rated at 20A but only 15A from each socket. Also, the two sockets do NOT have to use the same wires. There are plenty of houses where one socket is switched while the other is constantly powered. That's the whole reason there's a tab that you can break when installing a receptacle to isolate each socket.

It's the same thing effectively. Outlets with two plugs are using the same wires…

The last picture is hilarious....

Red X thru the "GFCI Outlet" then shows it charging a phone next to a sink in a bathroom (where GFCIs are mandatory).

I guess you could have a remote GFCI, but still lol.

How exactly do you expect it to utilize a 2nd outlet?

Not only that, but it's also possible the two halves are fed from different phases in the breaker box (I don't know if it would be "to code" to do so or not, but nevertheless I wouldn't assume they're on the same phase), meaning if you *did* bridge them together you could create a 240v short circuit.

Both outlets would be (usually) in the same circuit, there is no benefit in using both.
As others said, there is a risk if not properly wired…

True. I have a couple devices like that. One will be okay on pd, but works better on qc3.0. The other claims it can be damaged by pd.

There are no good reasons for this ever to happen, and a lot of absofu**inglutely terrible ones. This never, ever happens by chance and would never pass code. The only chance is you have some diy engineer go rogue to put a 240v appliance on a standard receptacle and then splice a dual plug into their appliance. If you just have to have a 240 plug (in the US) for a foreign appliance and don't want to put on a proper 240 you may as well at least do it safely and buy a UK receptacle and wire 240 that way.

As for the switched outlet comment - having a dual plug on these would merely defeat the switch with no advantage. With a single you could (theoretically) plug into either outlet and choose whether it's switched on not. With two plugs it would mean clipping the second set of contacts and…terrible idea, again.

(TBH I *would* like a 3000W UK kettle in my kitchen)
