I just picked up 12 bags at my local store about an hour ago. This is their "Memorial Day Sale" and it's listed not by price but "buy three get three free". I had some 10% off coupon from their new MyLowes membership and it stacked with the deal. Was about $2 a bag.

Whats the difference between in ground and potting soil?
In ground probably has no perlite for aeration, thus this soil will compact and hold more moisture which you don't want in a potting mix. Too much moisture in pots will lead to plants rotting.

You can always turn this into potting mix by adding perlite, bark, sand, etc…anything that doesn't hold water well. But by that point and cost you should just buy potting mix.

Menards rebates are not real cash rebates.

You are forced to use them by buying more crap from Menards.
That's IF you get the rebate. I've now sent in two for Menards and never heard from them again.

It's tough to do those anyway, you end up trying to save receipts to send them all in the mail, then you end up forgetting them past the due date. I never buy anything there with Rebate in mind. Stamps cost money. Only thing good about Menard's rebate was when Home Depot matched it before.

Potting soil is mostly made of peat or other light material, along with maybe some perlite and some compost. The reason for this is to make the soil as light as possible so that there is good drainage and water retention.

In ground soil is mostly made of compost and heavier organic matter. And you generally mix this with your native soil (depends on the package, around 1:1 bagged soil to native soil). The reason for this is that you are relying on your native fauna (worms, etc) to aerate your soil.

I mean, I do use in-ground garden soil in pots sometimes, with a healthy helping of perlite and peat moss or coco coir. The main practical difference I see is it stains everything black or brown, including your hands and the water. And you might want to sterilize it with hot water before using indoors, if you cared about bugs and stuff.

How is this compared to the Walmart brand stuff? [walmart.com] I found at least a good handful of bits of plastic and a small bucket of rocks.
The walmart is far superior. I try the miracle at lowes, HD and the ace hardware. The ace is an improvement but still not as good as the walmart brand. The ace is 1cf for 2.50. Walmart is 2cf for $5.

Yes, but I think the one at Lowe's is better. I got some from Lowe's earlier in the season when they had the same deal, and also from HD when they had it for $2/bag. HD bags were very loose and felt half empty compared to Lowe's.

How is the quality though? The Walmart stuff had what I thought was an unreasonable amount of plastic and rocks in it. The soil for potted plants at Costco had barely any.

I have used this several times in a veggie garden and always find it a bit clumpy (clay?) but generally well sifted and not much inorganic stuff like plastic. That being said not much organic chunks either. Its pretty dense. I mix it 1/3rd + 1/3 compost to loosen it and make it more aerated then 1/3 native dirt which for me is pretty good quality but sometimes high in clay. Then I place the plant in the hole. A lot of this will vary depending on how you want to use and the makeup of your natural soil conditions.

I use potting soil for potted plants or raised beds. As others have said this stuff is way too dense and muddy when wet.

Menards has the same brand, 1cu ft. For $2.22 after rebate. I'm in Illinois if that matters.
What stores have it for that price? I just checked local Menards and the price is 3.33 for 1 cu ft or 2.96 after rebate.

I was attracted to Lowes today for this soil. They had signs on the miracle grow stacks, buy 3 get 3 free. Price was marked $2.29. Then the bait and switch [my opinion], clerk said it means you are getting them %50 off [ 4.58 regular] therefore you get charged 2.29 for six bags.??? I was expecting 3 @ 2.29 and 3 for free, like the sign said. A more appropriate sign would have been $2.29 each, nothing about %50 off. Embarrassment(
