Federalist is slipjoint (non-locking) and the Zing is 8Cr steel (fairly common and can be found on cheaper knives). Not the best value IMO but maybe the Kershaw branding is worth it for some
8Cr13MoV is a competent budget blade steel if it gets a good heat treatment. Spyderco uses this exact steel in their budget Bird line and even in the Spyderco Tenacious and Resilient that sell north of $50 everywhere and are considered great knives. Now, Spyderco does one of the best heat treatments on 8Cr13MoV, but Kershaw's is pretty good, too. Plus their build quality ain't too bad, either.
$20 is a good deal for the Zing. I live in Southern California and we have Big 5 Sporting Goods stores out here, and they have various knives on sale every week. They seem to float an email coupon for the Zing and a few other Kershaw base models, including the OSO Sweet on occasion, for $20 every month or so. They do ship, but free shipping doesn't kick in until $69+.
It's worth is to jump on their mailing list at the bottom of the page for the coupons they drop almost daily. They have good deals on shoes, knives, and other sporting goods. Sometimes they will put ridiculous knives on sale like a 14" Elk Ridge Bowie for $11, an MTech fixed blade Karambit for $8 or a 15" Elk Ridge recurve combat knife for $12. And, yes, I bought all of those to goof around with. https://www.big5sportinggoods.com/store/
Thanks. I have one on the way from Bereli. I have been looking at this knife for about a year
and the price is right. I almost ordered when they had it for $59 but at $49 it was a no brainer.
I received my Federalist from Bereli and it was brand new in the box with quick shipping. The blade was centered and sharp. It is an awesome USA knife. They are someone I would order again from.
