What is everyone's problem with Newegg? I've been buying from them since 2005 (if memory serves) and never had a problem with their customer service on any product. Besides, Newegg is just the storefront here, goHardDrive is the actual seller and shipper on this deal. I'd grab a pair of these without hesitation, except I just ordered a pair of 18TB drives last week for $135.00 each.

I have a 10TB version of this drive. Picture a grandma with the shakes holding a box of rocks. That's about what these sound like when their busy.

Go on YouTube and watch Gamers Nexus. They did a report about Newegg.

You're talking about a drive with a 2.5 million hour MTBF...... I think anyone would take those odds counting on a typical life expectancy!

Maybe I misunderstood your intent but it seemed like your post implied you expect these drives to have a typical lifespan of 2.5 million hours (285 years).

I am very confident with 120 Terabytes worth (and counting) of their proven reliability. Warranty doesn't mean a thing if you never need to use it, as is most often the case.
Yeah its luck of the draw. Out of the 6 I bought. 3 was to be return because of bad sector or s.m.a.r.t failure.

That's what I got out of it too. Do not post links that contradict a plain reading of the comment.

Fun fact: an 18 year old US male has a MTBF of about 8,000,000 hours.

Nope. Never again with seagate. 4 of my seagate drives have died. Not a single one of my WD drives has failed me.

Ditto. Been using them since 2002. Never once had an issue with anything. I've lost track of how many Seagates I have in my server. The only one I've ever had an issue with turned out a bad cable shorted it out but they replaced it immediately.

Anyone have these and can comment on the noise levels?
I have 10 and 12T versions of these. There is definitely head noise especially when there are 3 or four of then synced together. I wouldn't put them in a recording studio for sure. In a cabinet in the living room might be OK depending on who you are and how many are running.

My reply was to "awdrifter" and his/her statement of data centers using up about half the life expectancy of these drives. Then I told him/her what that life expectancy was. Then I gave everyone a simple easy way to directly understand what MTBF is and what it really means. This was done specifically to eliminate any potential "yeah but" finger pointing noisy B.S.

These are facts. My statement was a fact. The link I provided was a fact. I implied nothing, you assumed! But if 1.2 million hour life expectancy is the norm for a typical PC drive, then these server drives with a 2.5 million hour life expectancy is a bigger number better scenario! Again, this is a statement, it is a fact, do not assume I mean to say anything other than what is specifically written in-front of you. To fully understand that life expectancy rating, see link below:

seagate + refurb + newegg RUN
^this

the idea of buying a hard drive that is a refurb is scary , and my trust in Seagate is scary as I had a failure both home and work on Seagates

unfortunately my current backup drive is a Seagate, not sure what I was thinking, guess I got lured into the SD effect - hence I am looking for a good deal on a WD as I need a larger size

That's a good start, but I would consider a different box to hold your drives. In my Video archive I use this below:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MD2L...dp_it&th=1

The key things I look for is a box like this are individual drive power switches with fans for cooling and no RAID. There is no reason to light up every drive when the thing you want only lives on one of them. And cooling is important, HDD's shouldn't really run much above 100*f or 40*c as it can shorten their lifespan, much like anything else I guess. And RAID, don't pay for something you won't use, unless you are going to use it, then it's good for backing up your archive. But this can get out of hand real quick. I'd need over 200TB to back up just what I have at this moment, it's not exactly feasible.

If you don't like the tower look, this below is also a good option that ticks all my boxes plus it can be daisy chained to grow with your needs:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CX14D..._lig_dp_it

Networking is another potential concern. But if you have a modern router, then you could easily just plug your storage box into that to feed anything in your home or elsewhere. Otherwise, you might want to consider a NAS or something with that built in capability. But most of us are probably more interested in a DAS like the two links above.

I have bought 3x from gohardrive , each time buying 4 12gb refurbs. First time went very good, all 4 drives gave No errors, and initialized no problems, good SMART. I was happy.

2nd and 3rd orders had problems with initializing my drives, and smart errors! Was terrible experience for me, and decided not to buy from them.

I have had good experience with ServerPartsDeals with 14TB WD enterprize Manufacture Refurbs, every drive initialized and smart was good...I bought 10 drives from them.
I have can't initialize on one and the second worked and crapped out when transferring about 300gb of files to it. I did a return on mine. Bought from go hard drive on eBay. They were wrapped well and they arrive in a timely manner, but they didn't work.
The two I have from serverpartdeals are fine. I guess the same thing could've happened with them, but this is a bad first impression from go hard drive.

Hahaha, yeah, you and me both! I've got some 25+ year old IDE drives still working good as new! It will probably take a solar flare to finally kill them, maybe that wont even be enough...?
