Galvanized steel has a zinc alloy coating which protects the underlying steel from corrosion and extends the life of the steel. It's also true that zinc can get into your soil over a period of time. Healthy plants require zinc. However, any leakage will never be enough to negatively impact you. You can also test for it if you're that concerned.

I bought these during the pandemic, they are awesome. Only thing to watch out for is that the top edge is pretty sharp so be careful with kids. No issues rusting or anything, this price is a steal. Fill with a layer of cardboard, yard refuse, and then top off with soil as to cut down the expense. Was a great investment for the family. Zone 7b.

I can buy a LOT of veggies for $40. How many years will this last? A few? It had better work real hard to pay its way.

Hope it's not too hot where you are. These things will cook root systems if exposed to too much light/heat. Buyer beware. Wink

BUT the exercise you receive from planting the vegetables is worth more than grocery store savings. How many years will YOU last buying store bought vegetables ?

These are contaminated with lead. How much lead is safe again?
I would suggest checking your own drinking water for lead before complaining about galvanized steel potentially leaking lead into soil.

They stay cooler than wood beds. The metal reflects light (heat) very well.

I just built some beds this week in the same dimensions, my local home depot is ~$30 for an 8ft 2x12. Consider this a pretty good deal if you like the aesthetics.
