I had first hand experience with this bag (the 60L) and returned it. The material was too thick/cumbersome. I liked the 60L Voyager, but my fav was this eagle creek because of the cinch straps and how it felt on my back (never bounced around). https://www.eaglecreek.
With that said, I also ended up buying the voyager on this deal and very happy with it! Pay a few bucks more over the MIER, you will be happy with the quality.

Ahhh thx for the heads up. I wish this had the shoulder strap just for additional convenience. That makes sense because it's over 3lbs but it has so many more reviews than the NF. This NF has no chest straps which the backpack straps will tend to slide off shoulders.

1) No shoulder strap
2) No way to stop side handles so in backpack mode they are just flopping around
3) Have to unclip the straps to access main compartment when in backpack mode
How annoying are these in day to day use for travel (IE not just a gym bag or something)? They seem like they'd be extremely annoying.

They are pretty great actually. I don't care for a shoulder strap it's a backpack duffel. I have no straps hanging off mine but it's also the 32L which is a great size. I mostly use it for travel so having to quickly unclip a buckle is easy if I need to open the bag completely. And it's really not that bad to be honest, just pointing out it takes like 2 seconds, far less time than unclipping side compression straps seen on many bags.
Quality is decent, bag is lightweight and comfortable. I added my own foam to laptop compartment as that was admittedly a bit of an issue. I like it quite a bit and find it very easy and convenient to use for travel.

I bought 4 42L and 2 2L, one in a different color. They're excellent, in fact, they're as close to perfect as any bags. They're the perfect blends of duffel bags and travel backpacks. They cavernous like the Patagonia Black Hole or the Cotopaxi Allpa. Unlike those duffel bags, they are narrow. Wearing it as a backpack doesn't look stupid . It also has a pocket on every side so it provides a bit of organization that the black hole and Allpa don't. On the other hand, as a travel backpack it's just as good as the Black Hole MLC or Mini MLC and the Allpa 35L or 42L while providing the duffel interior and packable down to the size of a toiletry bag.
As for the cons you listed, they're nice to haves.
1. Not many bags in this category provide a shoulder strap, you would have to buy one and strap it on.
2. Again, this is a nice to have but not a big deal. I don't care for it flopping around. The Black Hole is the same way.
3. You really don't have to unclip to access but it would make it better to access the full bag. Unclipping literally takes less than a second. The clip is nice and quick.
In addition some nice to haves would be, a sternum strap and some more interior mesh pockets.
I don't understand how such a great bag can be faulted so trivially. I'm not even discussing quality because in this class they're all great.
