I have been using the stormbreak 3 for a couple of years. I have done multiple camping trips with it, including a week long bike/camping (supported) trip, which I'm about do do again soon. It's easy to setup/breakdown, has very functional space, it's kept me dry, and the rainfly door design is great with how many ways you can pin it open. I'm 6'2 and have the 3-person, it's just long enough for me and big enough to fit all my gear inside with me comfortably. It didn't come with a footprint, but I just bought a 6x8 tarp for <$10 and it fits almost perfect, just tuck the edges under the tent. It's a bit too heavy for backpacking/bikepacking, but if you're car camping, or have a supported trip it's a great tent - especially at this price!

Great price but 1 man is a little tight if you're little larger than average size.
I would say if you're over 5'10" it's too small

Is this a good tent for a new scout?

Most scout trips have 3-4 scouts per tent. Have never been on one with one to a tent other than adult leaders. Troops may vary though.

At least in the troop I was in, the troop owned and maintained the tents. No scouts really brought their own and the tents in use tended to be more heavy duty/durable tents since they weren't getting carried that far and they were getting a lot of abuse.

Scouts did have their own backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, etc. Those seem like better things to buy for a new scout. I kept using my scout-era backpack until I was 31!

I got the 2p for my son on sale previously. This is exactly what he needs. Our troop does monthly campouts where the gear is transported in trailers/vehicles and they unload directly to the campsite. If and when they decide to do backpacking trips (which would be once a year for us), this will still probably be sufficient.

I used an $30 Ozark Trail tent when I first started backpacking that is damn near a clone of this. To the extent that I suspect they both had the same manufacturer. Same weight and floor area even. I'm 6'1" and made it work, but it was REALLY tight. My biggest issue was the overall volume and it just felt so cramped when trying to change clothes, etc. I upgraded to a Lanshan Pro trekking pole tent a couple seasons ago for the weight savings, but even in the 1P Lanshan the size improvement is immense.

If you poke around backpacking forums (Reddit, etc.) and Youtube there are some well reviewed freestanding tents available from companies like Naturehike that will probably give you a bit more room for nearly the same price and weight.

It's a lot better than what I carried as a kid many years ago.

It's not crazy light, but a 5lb 2 man isn't going to be a massive problem. I doubt your scout trip sends new kids on 30 mile a day hikes.

That's one light man…
