As others have noted, the new ones are Nissans, and they have the dreaded CVT transmission which is notorious for failing at 60-80k miles.
Mine failed at 60K and I ended up dumping the car.
Check out some youtube videos about it- you don't want a Nissan
I have my eyes on this SUV for some time now. The PHEV version only. Here is is why I am considering it still for the price PHEV only)
- PHEV trim at this price is hard to find.
- Drives and handles better than a Honda Pilot
- Luxurious inside out.
- Ugly front but now I am starting to warm upto it and liking it the more often I see it.
- Very peppy for its size.
- Impressive turning radius
- Serious AWD when you need it unlike name sake AWDs.
- 3rd row in a pinch, but i found this more of a dog seat than for kids.
- Plenty of trunk space.
- Warranty 10y/100k including the Electric power train.
- Definitely borrows a lot of Interior from Nissan Rogue namely display, window shades, panoramic sunroof, 360 view and some).
- Nothing under the hood is Nissan like. Motor is designed and built by Mitsu albeit seems under powered on paper. But most SUVs are targeting fuel efficiency over pep. But PHEV with the EV motors is peppy as it is.
- 38miles EV range. I could see it stretch to 40miles easily.
- Big inside Small outside.
- Gray leather seats unlike Honda forcing Black seats on almost every trim on theirs these days
- Memory seats driver and passenger.
- 3 zone climate control and heated rear seats as well.
- There is no engine noise whatsoever when it kicks in.
- Feels rugged.
The fact that the whole thing is made in Japan (the reason it also does not qualified for the EV credit) makes me feel confident about the durability and build of this thing. Feels like Mitsu are trying to make a come back (and very likely will) with the way they built this SUV. Granted their decade worth of dismal cheapies they produced. But Outlander PHEV is nothing like what they did in their bad decade.
Anyone owning the PHEV feel free to chime in .. need Inputs not somethung someone just trashing this brand based on one model (every car brand has one trashy model btw).

You're comparing this to a Honda Pilot as far as drive and handling? Why though? This isn't in the same segment. Like comparing apples and oranges. This is more comparable to Nissan Rogue, Rav 4, Tucson, etc ie small/compact sized SUV. Just because this has 7 seats doesn't make it in the same segment as the Honda Pilot...which is in the same segment as the other mid sized SUV's...Toyota (Grand) Highlander, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Chevy Traverse, VW Atlas, etc

All my previous cars were Toyota and Mazda, and I still chose the Mitsubishi over their offerings after researching and test-driving a lot of cars (EV6 is super nice though, if I had to pick a non-SUV that would be it - it has a 1500watt inverter also, but in the second passenger row vs in the trunk in the Outlander). I also have a last gen RX350 in our household and the Outlander is superior in everyway, even interior and ride and cost much, much less after the EV rebate (56k vs 43k) - a Model Y owner I know told me he regretted getting it after seeing how nice the Outlander was (he really liked the leather and panoramic sunroof) and because of the range anxiety he has when going on road trips.
Also NONE of the competitors can do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R...v_c
Outlander is a close second and may be a tech marvel in disguise. It's a joy to ride. Try one when you get a chance. You will be stone surprised.
RAV 4 prime was a contender but its price stinks garlic farts. I know some like them.

My son drives it too and has stopped using eco mode because it is slow to get going. But is fine in normal mode. Seems to get good gas mileage. Drives well. Looks a bit sporty which I like. Two cons, third row is really small but I don't use it so doesn't bother me. We just keep third row down to make the "trunk" area bigger. I like how it has a sun shade so you can cover packages or keep sun off groceries. The other con is console space. I like to have lots of space for my "stuff" and I could really use more. Also cup holders. There is a bottle holder on door but it's at an angle and not all travel cups fit. But I have found similar cup holder and consoles in comprable vehicles.
Also had a great dealer experience. Well first dealer was horrible but went to a different dealer and had amazing experience. Haven't done any service so can't speak on that.
