Please stay away from the Mirai. The hydrogen/H2 fuel costs $36/kg. The $15K fuel card they will give is good for 25K miles. It'll cost ~$180 to fill up, which is good for ~300 miles. I'm part of a telegram group of Mirai owners. Many there cannot get near to 400 miles advertised range, no matter how hard they try. People in SolCal have to deal with unreliable H2 stations. People in SF just had their only 3 local stations closed permanently.

The difference is that Mitsubishi has rejected compensating the victims, including my grandfather, who was forced to work for them without pay. I'm sorry if my comments bothered you; I just wanted to share that.
That's awful, I'm sorry to hear that. I wasn't bothered. Thanks for sharing!

No more Mitsu-SHITTI for me. They screwed me over back in the late 80's with a bad engine design in my Montero. I wound up paying for 2 engines as they kept cracking and wouldn't cover my model year in their recall.
Your experience wasn't typical. The Montero and its mechanically identical twin the Pajero are the gold standard after the Land Cruiser in most of the rest of the world due to their reliability and capability specifically in harsh conditions.

It has been exported to 170 countries and is often a top choice by NGO's / government agencies in some of the harshest parts of the world.

These modern day ones look fairly crappy compared to the 90's Monteros except maybe the PHEV.

Why stay away from Nissan? My Nissans have been working just fine. Maybe things have changed these last few years?

I own a 21 Telly SX-P. I can't imagine cross-shopping the two; they are two completely different cars. The Telly is a near-luxe car with 10 year (powertrain) warranty and has had reviewers raving for about 4 years now. I'm not aware of any raving for this Mitsubishi. The Mitsu Outlander (rated 77 on Consumer Reports) competes against smaller, simpler cars, like the RAV4 (89), Subaru Forester (88), Kia Sportage (87), and Hyundai Tucson(85). They all outclass this car for most folks.

Mitsu is dying on the vine in America. I can't imagine buying one (any of them, alas) in America in the past 10 years or so; they have neither money nor engineering prowess required to introduce competitive cars in this country. I wonder how long they will continue in the USA; IMHO most Mitsu dealers have a primary business of either selling another brand or selling used cars, and they sell Mitsu on the side.
That was not my experience at all. I watched every major car reviewer who reviewed the Outlander on YouTube, and every one was positive. Probably a few hundred hours from all the top reviewers. What did I miss?

I said for me it came down to those two. For you, maybe it was something different. Both were well within budget, but for how much I drive (or don't) and how much I care (or don't) about all the superfluous bells and whistles added on to the price tag, I kinda do wish I went with the Outlander and saved $15k.

Folks have a budget and strictly want brand new car. Used car is a crapshoot these days. Why chance it when it is not for them?

Yep the haters never watched the reviews nor test drove it. I literally bought it after my first test drive after test driving the competitors and an EV6 right before - all my prior cars were Toyota and Mazda and someone in my household has the last gen Lexus RX350 - Outlander PHEV is better than that also and a lot cheaper.

I don't consider YouTube to be an unbiased and authoritative review source. There are a few interesting opinions there, but overall it's just a bunch of people posting opinions, frequently with a lot of free review models they get, and no serious comparison data. CR is on a completely different level.

To me comparing the two makes as much sense as comparing a RAV4 and a Telluride; the Outlander is a lot more like the RAV4 than it is like a Telluride. Try putting a full size desk in the back of an Outlander; you can't. It just isn't the same thing, so a price difference of $15k for a significantly larger car that is significantly nicer inside makes sense (nobody, for instance, says the Telluride inside looks cheap; I've seen several negative comments on the Outlander insides and leather in this thread…). I'm happy you are happy with your car; the unbiased reviews from CR indicate clear differences in quality still between the base Outlander and the base RAV4/etc. models, as I've already posted, not to mention with the Telluride.

And I'd never buy a Mitsu in America in 2024. Maybe they will improve; maybe they won't. I don't want to be a beta tester. The mostly likely scenario IMHO is they become a marketing brand / reseller for Nissan/Renault and cease any real development on their own, ala Buick/Cadillac/GMC/Oldsmobile/Pontiac/etc. brands. Given the cash crunch that N/R/M Alliance has had over the past decade, things, IMHO, do not look good.

Further data point: Mitsu Outlander can tow 1500 - 2000 pounds based on model (less on PHEV); Kia Telluride tows 5000 pounds.

Inside cargo area, Outlander at 64 cubic ft (smaller than a RAV4 even…), Telluride has 87 cubic feet.

The two are completely different classes of vehicles, and I find cross shopping between the two to be very unusual. I don't think most people would do so.

Given CarPlay and Android auto, it's hard to care about manufacturer entertainment systems much anymore.

I can safely say you haven't even seen one let alone driving one. This thing is beautiful (the PHEV). And I come from the Pajero time when there was nothing like MitsuPajero at that time. There probably isn't anything close to Pajero even today.
Outlander is a close second and may be a tech marvel in disguise. It's a joy to ride. Try one when you get a chance. You will be stone surprised.

Nor do, but YouTube didn't do the reviews. They were done by individuals, some with better resumes than others. And I definitely trust the opinion of Scotty Kilmer over that of dclive. No offense.

I totally agree that to you it makes zero sense to compare the two. To me, it did. And if you knew what my budget was, how large my family is, the age of my family members, where I was planning on living, which models I was looking at for which purposes, how often I drive, what vehicles I currently owned, whether or not I would be keeping my current vehicles, what my needs are, what my wants are, what my priorities are, whether or not my wife is a crappy driver, what kind of vehicle she wanted, and all of those reasons I just listed for myself applied to her, as well... and what my personal style is, among a number of other things, then maybe it would make more sense to you. Does that make sense?

Two things --

1. See above about Scotty Kilmer.
2. I never thought about any of that, because I don't care about any of that.
