"black" or barracuda drives have always been known for their noise levels. These 2 drives were the only option for a 1/10th increase in speed till ssd came out. People would shell out 1.5x the cost for a loud drive. Those old drives have never really had any advancement in 20 years. 7200 rpm is the majority partially because it's not wanted because it's sound. ssd made them pretty much obsolete.

"According to Western Digital, their Black hard drives have a noise level of 20 decibels when idle and 36 decibels when operating."
Can't find the specs, but
This not 100% scientific controlled video "Western Digital UltraStar HDD Noise Level Test"; shows the 10tb hgst pretty much stays around relative 20db at all Times. .

This page" Western Digital Black 8TB HDD Review: Not Back in Black ". Does show a 2x speed increase over the hgst tho. That's possible not real world indicative as the later testing shows sustain does show a 1.5x or so. An they are using benchmarks an not loading games or media. Which almost never can be relied upon. It still give sit a bad review simply cause ssd is so fast (if you have a good ssd thats not some fake ssd speeds. My dell takes like 5-15 minutes to load r6. So some ssd (1-7%) are almost just the name" ssd" or nvme") . I don't think on my old computer there was a load time on anything an i would edit games to remove the forced intro credits to double it's boot speed. An those were some of the first ssd. Always use a ssd for boot if you can an if you have enough room keep the one game you play constantly on it if worried about speed.

I have a 1TB SSD boot drive and a 4TB SSD secondary drive. This HDD is for extra storage like pictures, raw video recordings, and secondary games that I just want to good around with but don't need super fast access to.

Based on your post, I'm wondering how loud this WD Black HDD is going to be at idle and when it spins up.

I think as a general perspective, you have to wonder what use case needs 6 TB of high performance storage (high performance by platter hard drives standards). I think most people would be better off with an SSD for their high performance needs and then something cheaper and slower for storage.

Any ideas for a slower, cheaper HDD for storage? $110 for 6TB doesn't seem too shabby.

Yes I am looking for 6TB so I clone a failing Passport drive. Hoping for under $100.

Honestly I would just get this for an emulator drive and offload them my SSDs, but only if it was 10K RPM, not 7200.. hard pass.

What's wrong with it? $110 for 6TB seems reasonable right now. I have two SSD drives and need a third HDD for storage for pics, raw recordings, and games that I want downloaded at a reasonable speed, but not taking up space on my ssd.

Tbh, this is around the price you should be looking for for 8tb, not 6tb

Decided on a Blue 8TB for almost exactly the same price. Supposedly more quiet, shorter warranty, but exactly what I need. TU and repped.
