Happened to find this Sonos in-wall speakers on sale at my local Best Buy (midtown Manhattan).

Didn't have any in stock, but was able to order through a sales associate at the discounted price.

For non-Sonos enthusiasts, these are regular in wall speakers that need an amplifier, specifically the Sonos AMP if you're in the Sonos ecosystem. The architectural line of "In-Wall Speakers by Sonos and Sonance" are the only speakers that support support True Play tuning when paired with a Sonos Amp.

I have an arc and sub already. Can I add these as rears? Or can I add multiple sets and use it all together?

You need a Sonos amp but you can use them as rears.

Calling these Sonos is misleading to say the least. They are made by Sonance. They are also passive, so they need to be connected to an amplifier and thus will not connect to a Sonos system without a Sonos-compatible amp.

They're literally made by sonos. They say sonos on the front don't be a Karen

Is this a Sonos or really a Sonance speaker?

Sonos does not make passive speakers. Its a rebadged Sonance just like the outdoor speakers.

Using in walls should be your last resort sound quality wise.

Odd reason to be critical of these. In wall/ceiling is the most aesthetic/least obtrusive way to add sound to rooms. Alternative is some speaker on a shelf/countertop and dangling power cords.

Why would you be ripping them out years/months later? Speaker technology hasn't changed in years. Just the processing/signal communication (i.e., Bluetooth, Spotify connect, etc). Which means you just change your amp/processor, and leave your speakers alone.

The two real downsides are 1) if you don't have the wires already run, it can be a pain and likely not worth it and 2) while the sound quality will be good, you can usually get better sq in a standalone speaker. That said, in a room with bad acoustics anyway where you don't need studio level quality (like a kitchen) hard to beat in wall/ceiling).
Sound quality is exactly the reason. Things will always sound tinny. Secondly, perhaps I remember the Creston stuff too well, that stuff keeps getting ripped out as it sounds terrible imho.

Wow, the sonos amp actually locks out features unless you buy their passive speakers? I am intrigued by their greed. How do they even do that? Must be by serial number linked to account, no?
At least they don't require a "special" $999.99/meter cable to work.

Are these already powered?

Edit: I see you'll need an amp

Can I use my Yamaha amp/receiver or does it have to be a Sonos amp?

Like buying tv that can only play Netflix.
Even worse since these are basically a permanent install. Speakers that lock you into an eco system is weird to me.

If they are just passive speakers then the Sonos label is just pumping up the price. There isn't any proprietary tech and Sonos is a relaunch of the Bose model with today's technology - higher prices, huge marketing budgets and mediocre sound quality.

No amount of engineering could make a Bose 4" driver a "subwoofer", just like putting a huge hole in the middle of the woofer isn't going to improve the Sonos sound quality. Those pesky laws of physics.

Sonos Speakers connected to a Sonos amp…wouldn't want it any other way

There is a ton of mis-information in this thread. Let me help clear some up.

-These are Sonos branded speakers, but are made in partnership (and by) Sonance.
-They are passive speakers and therefor require an amplifier.
-They can be used with ANY standard 8ohm amplifier/receiver, however they were designed specifically for use with the Sonos AMP.
-When used in conjunction with the aforementioned Sonos AMP you will benefit from the ability to use Sonos' TruePlay (auto-tuning DSP) function for a customized sound curve to help 'optimize' the sound in your space.
-You can use them as rear speakers with one of their soundbars (and the required AMP) but unless there is a design necessity I would suggest something else due to the cost and complexity of install.

Those are the general facts. This is a great price for these speakers if you have the application. I have owned and sold Sonos for over 15 years and can't say that I felt the value of being able to run TruePlay on these vs. comparable Sonance (or other brands) speakers was worth the additional cost. TruePlay can certainly improve the overall performance in a space but the materials used in these general align with the most entry level series from Sonance while commanding a more premium price.
