Anyone who only wants the drill and driver can buy those with two 1.5 Ah batteries and a charger for $99: https://www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI.../317987595

Not as slick of a deal from a raw value standpoint, but paying more for stuff you don't want / won't use even if it's a great price ain't really slick neither.

The difference between an impact driver and drill is that an impact driver is designed to drive fasteners, while the drill is designed to bore holes. However, some drills also have a screwdriver function.

There are some pros to having a combined drill and driver. You get two tools in one, which saves on costs, and it's more convenient than constantly swapping between tools. But there are also cons. Drills don't have enough torque to reliably drive fasteners through hard materials. They drive fasteners slowly compared to an impact driver. And they rotate much faster, which means you have less control, and screw heads tend to get damaged.

This is a great starter set. I'm glad HD can still offer this for $200 after all these years.

The problem with this kit is that it is one and done. Good as basic tools, some battery to keep you busy, but it is not a repeat purchase. Bought it a few years back when we moved to the house, and it did cover most of the basics. For carrying out meaningful work, however, I had to upgrade some of the tools immensely, and also get more specialist ones.

Would make an extremely useful gift to new homeowners however.

TEST all of them right away. PROBLEM is if one breaks you have to return all. They have a high defect rate. I got this deal last year and one broke right away .. it was such a good deal I let it go. Sawzall broke after my first use this year so 2 of them were crap. Not worth the hassle imo.
I wonder if that is why there are so many Ryobi Sawzall parts on eBay.

I'd jump on this if I didn't start off with Dewalt 🤷🏽 ♂️
Dewalt will last longer and work better than these. This are extreme entry level.

A drill puts a hole in something
A driver puts a screw in something

Thanks for the replies and your advice in choosing the right tools.

It seems like you're mixing up 1/4" impact Drivers with a 1/2" Impact WRENCH.

If I was going to be spending $200 on a drill and impact driver kit I'd be getting ridgid or dewalt over ryobi.

1 As far as impact drivers I think most are 1/4" because they are meant to fit bits, that is what they do. I think you have impact driver and impact wrench confused. Someone else that knows more might want to chime in on this tho
I'm trying to figure things out, so being mixed up is quite likely. Although the reason I asked the question is because the HD page for this other tool set [homedepot.com] talks about a 1/4" impact driver, and so do some other product pages:

"Includes: (1) PBLDD01 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 1/2 in. Drill/Driver, (1) PBLID01 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 1/4 in. Impact Driver,..."

Almost all impact drivers are going to be 1/4". 1/4" being the size of hex base accessories you put into it.

The 1/2" in Drill /Driver refers to the Chuck size. 1/2" being the max size of drill BIT the tool will accept. ( Some lower end drills are only 3/8" max. )

I'd pass on that …. set a SD Ryobi Alert and start hacking till you get the basics and a good supply of batteries.

Slight clarification on the drill, 1/2" is the largest size shank of a drill bit that it will accept. Most larger drill bits have turned down shanks and will fit in this drill.

Ryobi is notorious for not properly disclosing sizes/power like the other tool brands do so take a bit of what you read from them with a grain of salt.

The 1/2 in drill/driver is referring to the drill, not the impact driver. The impact driver is 1/4 in, the drill is 1/2 in

I bought this kit about 10 years ago. Drills are still fine. Batteries are still fine. Circular saw is tiny and underpowered; it's collecting dust. Recip saw has come in handy once or twice. My kit didn't come with a multi-tool, that would have been great. For my money, I would get a drill/driver kit ($99) and the battery + tool kit ($99), with the free tool being the oscillating multi-tool. Basically trade the crappy saws for another charger and more/better batteries.

Does the hack work for on-line orders? I have a Ryobi alert already set (good advice)
