For me this is cheap for a reason.

I tried this vs SuperCrema, which is my daily. SuperCrema tastes WAY better for me.

That is just for me though.

Somebody help me understand. I was under the impression that Espresso is a grind, not a roast. If you are buying whole bean, what is "espresso" about it? It's a medium roast. What am I missing? I could grind it as coarse as I want for drip/press or fine for my espresso machine

Haha! You are completely correct!

In practice, though, most espresso is made from darker roasted beans, therefore roasters will roast selected beans a bit darker (and this is when some will use Robusta beans in addition to Arabica in the blend specifically for espresso--though 100% Arabica is preferred for drip and other coffee making methods).

I find this Lavazza "Espresso roast" less dark (and close to a "Medium" or Vienna roast than some others which I find over-roasted.

For example, the Kirkland House "Medium" roast is actually very dark, almost a French Roast.

EDIT: The older, discontinued Kirkland House Blend was roasted very dark. The new version introduced this year, that is no longer roasted by Starbucks, is not as dark a roast.

In this case, "Espresso" simply refers to the name of the product. Since it's whole beans you can do with them whatever you want, including coating them in chocolate.

They also have "Espresso Italiano" and "Espresso Barista" which both also are just the names of the product like Sprite is the name of a Coke product.

It means that the flavor profile of the beans is supposedly suitable for making espresso.

I like coffee but not dark roast. I got this flavor last time it was on sale and didn't like it. Too stout for my wimpy pallet.

Perfect timing. Wife wanted to get these beans from Costco last weekend from this month's circular sale but its $10+. I told her to just wait until the next SD posting on these, it'll be cheaper.

I showed this deal to her just now and she said "Goddamn, you're right." Gotta love it. Smilie

I always thought that espresso was the roast and thr fine grind.... Thanks for that clarification.... FWIW I tried the Kirkland stuff and to me it was over roasted.. if it taste.like charcoal its too over roasted.. but hey thats me....

Ahhh, they used to, but they switched this year their roaster for their Kirkland Signature House Blend and Espresso Blend. Some have suggested the new supplier for their Kirkland coffees is the San Francisco Bay Coffee company.

Starbuck's Pike Place coffee is Medium roast.
