Customer reviews indicate that this remote has to be aimed directly at your Xbox.
Like others said - all Xbox remotes in the market are IR.

But if you are in the market for one, and care about parental controls, I would recommend buying the longer 8BitDo remote with the number pad.

I bought the shorter 8bitDo remote without a number pad (even though it was more expensive than the bigger one at the time, cause I figured the smaller one will be more convenient). I regret that decision now, and it's too late to return it.

There are two issues - if you are using a number lock on the Xbox startup log in screen, you cannot enter the number without the actual controller. So I have to go pick up the controller, log in, turn it off and then use the remote. Xbox UI doesn't allow you to navigate to the numbers with the remote. 8BitDo remote has the ABXY buttons but it does not have the trigger buttons, so you cannot punch in all digits.

The second issue is that on most streaming apps, if you lock out profiles via a number lock, without having numbers on the remote you have to navigate to the numbers and press enter; which makes the code decipherable. On remotes with numbers on it you can simply enter the number without your choices showing up on screen.

Again - this is an issue only applicable to folks who care about parental controls. But thought I'll share my experience in case anyone finds it helpful.
Yep, the Series X/S have a IR receiver (but not an emmitter like previous models) so it's line-of-sight for all remotes.

just get a fire 4k for like $25 instead of this. Way faster, dead silent, and uses less power than xbox. it is silly to use your xbox for youtube and netflix

I have a fire 4K. My Xbox series X is faster and does not have annoying amazon ads.

I agree with this sentiment. Though I prefer Rokus interface and remote over firesticks. But there are people who's Xbox only shuts down during blackouts and have never heard of their tv's input button. This could make their streaming experience nicer since they're currently using a their gamepad to do it.

I needed this since my Xbox is my only 4k Blu-ray player but disc controls using the gamepad is unreasonably terrible on Xbox. This has made the experience much nicer to the point that I'm actually watching my discs again.

Can your Fire 4K play DVD's and Blu-Rays? Does it have a TV Tuner?

Anyone have a comparison to the PDP Media Remote Control?
Absolutely horrible, do not buy it. Only get it for your worst enemy. I gifted one to my parents and replaced it eventually with one from 8bitdo. The main directional pad is sunken and incredibly difficult to get accurate presses. You would have to use it to understand, but it's very fatiguing on the thumb as well.

For those having issues hitting the IR sensor, you could look into something like this, https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B014EDRH3G.

It has better field of view in my experience. Plus, it has allowed me to place Xbox on far side of my entertainment center while maintaining usage of my Xbox media remotes.

Does it work for Series X? I found this in the QA section (copy pasting below) -

Q: Anyone know if this will work with the xbox series x and the universal remote control for xbox one, xbox one s & xbox one x,standard ir remote?
A: RESPONSE FROM MANUFACTURER-CABLE MATTERS:

No, this IR repeater cable will not work with the Xbox Series X or the remote control for Xbox one.

Odd, that's exactly what I'm using it for. Have the repeater in front of the Xbox Series X in vertical orientation and sit on couch and use remote.

Why not just download the xbox app on your phone/tablet as a free remote?

I'm able to enter my main system password with this remote. On the TV where it shows which gamepad buttons correspond to each number there's a smaller icon that shows the remote buttons. For instance the number 8 might show the RT icon. Underneath that it shows FF arrows. So the FF arrows on this remote would be 8.

I verified the all of the numbers are accounted for when I decided to keep this remote. But the numbers are certainly more convenient. And that's reason enough to look into the 8bitdo Long Remote for $20.
