This is something I found out when someone gave me a DoorDash gift card. In addition to a service charge and optional tip, the food prices are higher than those on the menu if you ate in the restaurant or ordered take-out. Being a long-time SDer, these higher charges are not how I roll -- even with the delivery convenience.

Also look for a "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" episode (S11 E6) where he savages DoorDash about how they stiff the restaurants and drivers.

You're right and be careful with those fukers

I think this thing is everywhere in the world.
I've worked with so many apps " none states apps " and the prices are higher than usual, one of those apps fired me bcoz I gave people my number and buy them food with reasonable prices 😄 do fuk them and I'm gonna do that forever 😉

I've bought a couple of times from Kroger's gift card portal. It's such an unpleasant experience. I've been trying to check out for 30 minutes and nothing processes.

Not all restaurants. Just need to check it against the restaurant menus

People making ~$80k or more and can get overtime should use Doordash. :-)

$20 meal for two
$6 menu upcharge (30%)
$2 service fee
$4 tip (depending on number of items and distance)
$32 total
~$29 after gift card savings

So $9 extra to have it delivered versus picking up.

$2 savings in mileage. 15 minute time savings.

So it depends on if you can make $7 bring home pay in 15 minutes.

It's restaurant dependent. Some have item markups, some don't. I've even seen the opposite where the restaurant has increased its in restaurant menu prices but forgotten to change its DD price listings for a while.

Likewise some have per restaurant offers/promos/'order X times get $Y off next'. Near me places have 'happy hour specials' from 2pm-5pm up to 30% off. Unlike Uber Eats most promos apply even if opt to pick up yourself.

If you happen to have a credit card that has given you free 'DashPass' which reduces fees, and pay some attention to offers there are times you can get food delivered for more or less the same as eat-in menu price - or even slightly less. That or even cheaper to order through DD self pickup (which also gives 5% DD credit back in addition to any credit card based CB).

Things like this deal where you are getting a multiplier paying ($45 -> $50) then stack on to all that.

TL;DR - DD can either be significantly more than ordering direct all the way to a significant savings if keep a look out for places that don't hike menu price and make use of offers. Also depends a lot on where you live.

Exactly. Money means different things for people with different income. I tell people that paying $5 extra in surcharge, service fee and tips for a $20 restaurant delivery is worth it if you value your 30 minutes spent picking up the order more than that $5.

People bring up meal planning, and it is absolutely correct that good planning and preparation saves money and time. But after your income reach a certain level, none of that matters. Often you just want a good meal, and $20 is nothing.

I don't order from any restaurant that charges more on their DoorDash menu, which there really aren't many at all near me in Austin. I also have had free DashPass for the past 2-3 years or so with Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. So I pay taxes, a tiny service fee, and then driver tip. We DoorDash a lot. Though I never tip less than $7.
