One of the first things I TURN OFF on laptops that have it. Annoying, changing brighness.
Review[notebookcheck.net]. Lenovo considers this a workstation, but it doesn't have a dedicated GPU. AMD CPU is two years old but still has great performance. Weight is 3.21 lbs per the review.

Way too old of a processor which is the most important consideration when buying a pc, especially now that the AI based snapdragon processors are in the market, these will be considered junk in 1-2 yrs from now once the AI laptops become the norm
so newer, more expensive laptops are better?
but this one should be good enough to get him through two years of college?
I'm looking for something mostly desktop replacement...something I can hook up to my USB dock for peripherals and my 49" 1440p ultrawide monitor. Do you think this internal graphics card can power the ultrawide? and if so, at any greater than 60hz?

Yes, shouldn't be a problem.

This is just a guess, but I suspect not. It's only got an HDMI 2.0b port, and no Thunderbolt. There is one USB 3.2 gen 2 port, but I have no idea if that can do anything over 60hz with an adapter.

Depends. My 10 year old desktop with 2060 plays games better than this.

The iGPU can easily run any resolution they make native displays for, any iGPU less than 7 years old can. Web browser, watching videos, office, any basic stuff. As long as you don't need to game on it at that resolution.
What really bugs me about my P16s with the otherwise same specs is that it doesn't support integer scaling, despite the AMD hardware inside being able to. Integer scaling makes low resolution things look basically perfect on high resolution displays when the low resolution times 2 or 3 and so on equals the high resolution.
Makes 720p look way better on 1440p and 4K displays, which would help immensely if you did want to run lighter games at lower resolutions on it.
I agree that they are trying to have their cake and eat it too (e.g. "P14s" and "workstation") and it is deceptive. 6850HS and H were not that big of an improvement, though.
This was a decent line. No problems with the T14 but did have one user crack a screen on a p16s, purportedly through no fault of their own but when is it ever their fault? We did have annoying issues with thunderbolt docking stations and 6850u laptops, but that may have been limited to EliteBooks. Just got users non-TB docking stations instead.
You could do worse. My son used this for college this past year. No issues at all. I paid a little over 6 about 10 months ago, but that was outlet pricing.
Isn't 32 gb of ram overkill ... I used to add to the max cap of 32gb but did not see appreciable performance increase for the hefty investment

I don't know this is sarcasm or not. But if not your comment is hilarious
This one runs faster and more efficiently than the latest Intel processors unless you go to the top of the Intel line
Snapdragon -- we need to see it to believe it, wait a month or two

You are getting diminishing returns going from 8 to 16 and from 16 to 32, especially if your current workflow doesn't require much memory.
However, your memory needs increase by itself even if you stick with the same workflow, as generally all software gets bloated and use more memory over time.
I think Lenovo charges reasonable money for memory upgrade, especially after coupons. I understand that different manufacturers (wink wink) could charge much more, and if budget is a concern it could be difficult to spend on memory. I wouldn't regret getting 32GB RAM on Lenovo.
Personally, I had to sell an otherwise perfect laptop due to 8GB RAM too restricting, and I stopped worrying about opening browser tabs since I got a 32GB machine. These are wildly different experiences. I would never skimp on memory again.

Hdmi 2.0, display port 1.4 or 20Gbps usbc is needed for the bandwidth of 1440p 144hz SDR. Many laptops can do display port 1.4 over USB-C.
This laptop has HDMI 2.0 so 1440p 144hz SDR and 119hz HDR., should be possible that way. It's USBC power power port should also support DP1.4 alt mode and allow 1440p 144hz also.

Processor, discreet graphics, screen (OLED, touchscreen, size, etc), laptop size are all capable of "overkill" because they can actually adversely affect your overall experience, depending on your wants / needs, battery life etc. You can't really have "overkill" in the memory section for a preconfigured laptop, because it's not like if you drop down to a smaller amount you get any money back. Same goes for storage. You just drop it off your "pros" list when comparing it to the next laptop.

but this one should be good enough to get him through two years of college?
Any opinions on if this is a good laptop and good deal?
Wait for more Memorial Day sales?
Wait till back to schools sales?
