Bought the 3s Granite for this prices in March during the last sale. I then proceeded to pay about as much as the car cost in replacement parts over the last few months. Not to mention the ESC and servo that crapped out and were replaced under warranty... The car is lots of fun, super fast, and very capable but be warned: if you plan to "bash", you will spend more time fixing than driving. These are hobby grade cars and part of the hobby is wrenching. You are buying into a new hobby, not just a casual toy.
Perfect time to introduce them to RC cars! Then you and them can go out and bash or race!
I won't completely disagree with you. I own RC rigs from many manufacturers including most of the brand names and some of the no-name brands. I've been generally impressed with the no-name brands, but my expectations were very low. And at the end of the day, the no-name brands will not have the same level of durability as Arrma, Traxxas, Losi, Axial, Team Associated, etc.

Sounds like bad driving to me. Been in this hobby for years and while you're not incorrect in that it is expensive, the whole point of it is to be able to fix and repair and upgrade. Simply breaking the car is not something that's easy to do unless you are doing dumb things with it. Hitting curbs, landing on throttle, treating the throttle trigger like an on/off switch, etc.
In other words, these are extremely durable cars but even the strongest machines have limits.
A general note on the age ranges for at least the Voltage. I would generally place this in the 10 and up bucket. However, the remotes on at least the Voltage I have (did they change remotes?) allows you to dial down the power (do it for both fwd and rev) as well as make the steering less sensitive. I would suggest that. The trucks are big enough and fast enough that they can/will hurt if they are driven into someone's foot/leg at full speed. The smaller 1/16th scale cars are better in that regard. However, unlike some of the 1/16th scale cars these have tires large enough to handle most cut grass. They also are more likely to drive over a small curb between say the driveway and sidewalk.
For younger kids I think the rock crawling trucks are generally a better option. We did some similar to this (not an endorsement of this exact model) https://www.amazon.com/DEERC-Remo...B086TV65QQ. They are much slower (5mph maybe) but with 4wd they can climb over impressive obstacles. Note these have solid axles and lots of articulation vs the independent suspension of the faster trucks. I'm sure there are better versions that offer things like proportional steering and throttle. The crawlers aren't going to be great for jumps but they can do some impressive off roading in a back yard.
I want to get an RC car for my 4-year old, but this seems a bit too much for him. Don't really want him driving into a neighborhood kid at 20mph. Can anyone recommend a good starter model, maybe a step up from the Walmart toy isle?
Something hobby grade but smaller scale. The new Typhon Grom (or Granite Grom if the 4 year old likes monster trucks, which what 4 year old doesn't) is awesome. I got one for me and one for my 4 year old. Perfect speed, extremely durable. Arrma knocked it out of the park with the Grom lineup.
I was looking for a Dog Lure system to set up for my dogs as they love doing it at the local dog training facility. Instead I bought a high end RC car like this last year on sale. It's been perfect as long as I keep the grass mowed! I just tie a plastic grocery bag to the end of it and they case it until they are dead tired.
This is going to be tough to hear, but too many people get hyped watching the likes of richduperbash or KevinTalbot and think that's a benchmark for bashing. It really isn't and I hope that's not what you're trying to emulate. Servos are a very big problem for 99% of people because that skip over end point calibration. ESC and motor burnout is most common due to excess temperatures and users continuing to run them without checking. Then there's the infamous landing. Go faster, break more parts. If the driver isn't well skilled in sticking proper landings, even more parts break. Then there's the hierarchy of sand, dirt, pavement, concrete/skatepark. Durability is a very subjective experience because there are too many variables. Thankfully the only thing I've really had issues with is differentials, which can be solved by throttle control, proper center differential setup, and all metal gears as a last result.
Not honing in on your case, but generalizing what leads up to the majority of problems when they occur.
Well...yeah. I bought a basher and I bash it lol. My driving skills have improved but I certainly have a long way to go. That said, I'm enjoying the ride and have enjoyed learning how to fix my truck. Why would anyone buy a Granite BLX and not push it?! It's a stunt truck. If I wanted to do laps on the street I wouldn't have bought a stunt truck.
Bought this a couple of years ago for Christmas. My boy took it off a 4" jump Christmas Day, and busted it up and made it unusable. Seems cheaply made.
The Vorteks is pretty damn quick out of the box. Installing the included speed gear will get you about 60mph. It also comes with a gyro equipped receiver which, when activated, will counter steer for you and keep your rig going straight as an arrow no matter the terrain. I've been in the hobby pretty good for almost 4 years now and have 5-6 rigs. Feel free to message me if you have any questions about Arrma products.
Had bought one of the Granite Voltages back when they were coming with Lithium Ion batteries. Gave it to my son, he ran it for a few days and had the ESC glitch out and melt. Whoops. But got great service from ARRMA, got a replacement vehicle, and we were off to the races again. Have since swapped that to a 3000 NiMh pack and he will use it for a few weeks, then forget about it, then back to it again. Got another Voltage for his brother to have and now they are drifting around the driveway and having a blast.
I would suggest anyone who is getting one of these to stick with NiMh. LiPo starts to break things. They are not going to take a ton of bashing, but have held up well to my kids. One body got destroyed, I have had to refill the shock oil a few times, but they have been pretty solid. Also don't run them in the mud or the water.
Personally I think they have been a great value compared to what you can buy at the big box store, and am thinking about another one so I can play along. Like any hobby, you can always go better, bigger, get more stuff and bits, but this is a nice way to dip your toe into the pond to see if its a hobby you like.
You probably want to buy a faster charger and a larger battery, but its nice that you can take this thing out the day you get it without having to buy more things.
Car battery and charger are not included or they are for the price. Not clear about that.
The Granite Voltage comes with everything you need. Every one of these listings has a "Needed to complete" section on them that tells you anything that isn't included.

No battery or charger included. I use zeee and powehobby batteries and they are decent for the price.
That's an untrue blanket statement. The Granite Voltage comes with batteries and charger.
Is the brushed 4x4 a good starter that I can upgrade the motor, esc and parts later?
Honestly, I'd start with the brushless one if you can swing it. It's much beefier all around. Youd have to sink a ton of money into the brushed one to get it to the same level and it would be a lot of work.
Arrma Granite Voltage is trash. Differential cups stripped quickly. Replaced with steel. Now the differential shaft sheared off and have to replace that. Also the solder job on power leads going to the motor was weak and disconnected. Skip this one. I spend more time diagnosing than driving it. Body shell is incredibly thin and will crack early. Honestly it should be discontinued.

This might be a better version of the same concept (no personal experience)
