$500 @5% yields $25 after 12 months. I can save up to $70 on my flight this year. That method works if savings rates stay high AND you can wait almost 3 years to fly. In addition, I get 2% back from my credit card anyways for this gift card purchase AND your always at the mercy of the airlines!
I mean, how often are you drawing those card benefits? Southwest scans your bags and you can track them via the app. So bag loss is pretty rare/corrected quickly.

Not saying you'll never use these card benefits, but through all my business and personal travels, I've had zero instances of needing any credit card travel benefits. When you account for the immediate 14% savings, the expected value of travel loss is less. So it's a better deal to "gamble" and gain a guaranteed 14% savings vs. the <1% chance of drawing a credit card travel insurance claim, which are pretty limited. You also subtract from the benefit the 14% savings here, further lowering the CC benefit.

I want to love SWA gift cards but they are just such a PITA. You can't use more than 3 per transaction...
I bought 4 and was able to use all of them in a single transaction (for 5 people).

While I agree that Southwest has increased their prices, so have other airliners...Other airliners often are initially cheaper but you find out they charge high baggage fees. Southwest still gives first two bags are free, so YMMV.
This is what made me go Southwest. Those baggage fees + seat fees quickly make a cheaper flight on another airline more expensive.

Prices on Southwest have increased since they lowered these gift cards. I find better deals with other airliners now, so not worth it to me.
It has nothing to do with the gift cards. They are an all Boeing airline. They were expecting a lot of new planes this year and are only receiving a fraction of them so they've had to cut back on flights at the same time demand has gone up which in turn drives up cost.

I fly Southwest every week on business routes. Pricing has been soft this summer but I never buy except during sales. The loads have been shrinking even though there are fewer planes. If they had more planes, I'm not sure they would be able to fill them. Granted, many people are seeing connections rather than nonstops and are voting with their feet. Let's not be kidding about the gift card sales, they would not be offering 429, 419, and 399 if things were going well.

I can confirm that these gift cards are ringing up as the $429.99 in-store. We purchased one today and used it to purchase tickets. We were already flying Southwest and this saved us some cash.

Very true. This is one of the great reason I don't buy any airline gift cards as I have Chase sapphire reserve anyways to avail all great travel benefits!!!

You don't purchase the full value of the ticket, you still put $10 or more on the credit card. Then the travel insurance is added.

Buying a $500 gc is an immediate $70 gain if you were planning on flying with them soon. Plus the 2% return on the credit card you used to purchase the gc applies here too for the $430 value.

It would take around 3 years to get the equivalent of $70 gain in a HYSA at 5% if you invest $430.

Plus, you don't have to report the $70 as you would have to in the earnings thru the hysa to the federal government or your state and thus pay taxes on it.

We've been using them for years and have never, ever had a problem. We fly multiple times a year between two homes.
