Warning Home depot gift cards at Kroger

I purchased two fifty dollar Home Depot gift cards at Kroger and they had no money on them went I tried to use them. I inspected the packaging before purchase and no indication of tampering however cards inside were fake cards. I just wanted to warn everyone not buy home depot gift cards.

Please elaborate on "fake card".
They had to have a valid card number for an account in order to have any funds added to them.

Please advise the resolution for this scam. Credit card chargeback?

Curious. Did they have the same card number as each other? I have a person in my circles, a gift card scammers had added their own sticker over the one that had come on the card which when paid for, added to the scammer's account instead of the actual one on the card. Then the scammer drained it before the gift card was attempted to be used.

I am not really sure how the scammer did this. The cardboard was sealed with no evidence of tampering. The cards inside were not legit and had no pin number. Im wondering if the original cards were taken and new ones made with the same barcode on the outside and fake ones were put inside and the scammer placed them on the stand at Kroger. Since this happened to me I have read a lot more stories on reddit that it happened to more people. I am not going to buy any more gift cards, I was only buying them for the 4X fuel points, not worth it.

In Ohio, a Chinese national has been arrested and charged for swapping out gift cards at a Walmart (but the article mentions other stores as well. So probably not just Home Depot or at Kroger.

Looks like if these cards are fake, you could take them back to the Kroger store tell them to give your money back.
I've read several places that you took a risk by buying the cards on the rack, but first time I've heard of it happening within the sealed cardboard container thing. But yes if you paid with a credit card I would sure do a charge back.

A couple of grocery stores were keeping Visa gcs behind customer service desk, you had to ask them for one
