12,000 BTU 1-Ton 20.8 SEER2 Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner Heat Pump Variable Speed DC Inverter+ System 110/120V

Seems like a decent deal. I been looking for one ever since I found someone here who would install it for me. Around here, only need AC for about a month so not looking for top efficiency.

Very curious on the community opinion from a frugal perspective. If you only need it for one month a year, why not get a Midea 12,000 but U-Shape window unit? Cheaper, DIY, and you could store it away for 11 months inside and hopefully keep it cleaner from the outside elements and hopefully last longer.

Ignoring the issue of labor, hassle of storing, and appearance.

The cost savings would allow you to get a 2nd or 3rd unit future replacement I would think.

Run half the cost? Isn't the wattage the same?
Watts are watts. It will take smaller wire and less inrush that's it Exactly draws less amps and less inrush but uses same wattage

Get the 220. And the pioneer diamantes are great. Make sure to get the one where heat works really low like -19 or something. Standard ones aren't great in winter

Got this 110v unit installed 2 years ago. Bought it for $550. Great unit and I barely notice any energy usage difference.

Window units are loud. I doubt anyone installing mini splits end up only using it for one month during the whole year. It both heats and cools so it can be used to regulate indoor temperature and humidity all year long. I installed a separate device that automatically turns on the mini split based on temperature thresholds so I don't even need to think about it.

If you are using an air conditioner for only one month per year, just get the cheapest window air conditioner or portable air conditioner. Or as someone mentioned, just live with the heat. If your area isn't particularly humid during the summer, maybe swamp coolers will suffice.

But I assume you live somewhere with a colder climate? You can consider getting a heat pump like this to use year round. If you are using electric heating, a heat pump will save you a lot of electricity. If you use gas, that will depend on your area's climate and gas costs to determine if a heat pump is worth it.

This is what I did initially and it's great during the summer, but moving it in and out of the window when seasons change is a pain, though not terrible. This also has a heater, which is the main thing selling me on it for my large game room area. Putting a mini split in there will mean that I won't often have to run the main house unit to heat and cool a couple thousand sq feet that I seldom use just to heat or cool the game room where I basically live.

The 120V one posted by the OP is rated at 10.3A, the lower priced, but similar 220V model posted by another user above is rated at 4.8A. It's not anywhere near a 3-5% difference in cost to run.
I'll just leave this here: P=IV

A good window unit is certainly an option. It mostly is the labor and aesthetics. The higher rated minis are quite a bit more efficient than even window units like the U as well, but with little use like that, it isn't a big deal. Really it's just the hassle and cost. In the same ball park and if the mini is in an easy to install location, I'd much rather have that. No hassle installing and removing all the time, especially digging it back out for those random freak warm days when you thought ac time was over. Especially with ones like the U's where it takes a fair bit of work to set up vs just tossing it in like normal window units. That said, being that the 12k U is only $279 at Costco, I'd go that route anyways despite that just because it's a good unit and half the price thus worth the bit of extra hassle.

Same here. I've used it 70%+ of the days since I bought it 2 years ago.Works great. Haven't had to add any refrigerant the last 2 years. Plugged it into a regular outlet.

This might entirely depend on how bad that one month gets.

Where I am at no one used air conditioners at all until about 5 years ago. The one month out of the year that got uncomfortably hot could be remedied with a few fans.

Now we see every year stories of old folks dying from heat stroke on the news.

Our old homes just aren't insulated for the new normal (winter and summer). During the one hot month in summer you can touch the ceiling in my second floor and it is uncomfortably hot at 11PM!

We can't sleep in the second floor bedroom during that time since the temperature reaches mid 90s at night with the windows open and fans blowing. Unfortunately the windows up there can't accommodate a window unit and mini splits are the only thing that fits without significant remodeling.

Conveniently enough there are 3 heaters upstairs that have been in the house for the past 30 years but haven't been used once in the last 5 years, so we can reuse the wiring.
