This is still working, albeit not as easy as it used to be. I'll add my steps in case it helps anyone. Note: Some of these steps can likely be done earlier than I did them. I ordered the phone on 8/19 and received today (8/21).

Day 1

Purchased phone on Walmart's website. Note email address used, phone number, and PIN.
Downloaded the two agreement PDFs during checkout. The Loan Agreement doc has the Verizon phone number information.
Received an email from Verizon later that day. "Your account email address has been updated."

Day 2

Registered a new account on Verizon.com under Mobile & 5G Home using the same Walmart.com purchase email.
Added the new phone to my newly created Verizon account using the phone number from the agreement and the PIN used during Walmart checkout.
Verified my account email and my "daily driver" phone number.
Installed the My Verizon mobile app on my daily driver phone and logged in. Neither the app nor chat would allow me to pay off my device.

Day 3

Tried to pay off device

The local Verizon store would not allow me to pay off my device. They sent a text to the device to "authenticate me". After explaining I didn't bring the device, he said the device couldn't be paid off for 30 days.
Left the store and Immediately added a credit card payment method in the My Verizon app.
Immediately called 800-837-4966 (Verizon Support number), enter the phone number/pin set up during checkout. Said "pay off device", automatic system read the phone number back to me, told me how much I owe, and asked if I wanted to use the card on my account. Said "yes". Received email confirmation of device payoff.

Went to the Verizon Chat to cancel the service. They originally asked if I wanted to end it after the current cycle. I asked to end the service effective today. It took some convincing for the rep to comply, but they ultimately did.
Phone finally arrived by FedEx. Inserted an H2O sim from Target for $1 before turning on the device the first time.
Put the sim in the phone and went to https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and click "start an unlock request" then follow the prompt to unlock the phone. Confirm the AT&T unlock request in your email. The approval came minutes after I clicked submit.
Confirmed unlock status at sickw.com

Thank you to all those before me that posted experiences and steps you took. I could not have pieced this all together without your comments.
T-Mobile no longer takes as trade in for top tier. Only reason why many bought the last time
Same $99. price with verification at Total by Verizon so no credit inquiry. Yes, after unlock (60 days) it works on every US carrier and most of the world's networks too. It's an auto unlock so no need to contact them. If you don' t want to pay the second month before the unlock, some say no need to buy the second month's plan. I elected to drop down to Total's unadvertised talk and text plan (no data) for $10. to make sure. I had the SE2 and the added 5G is added bonus with speed and coverage. I still have an old 5S and that thing runs like new with getting 4G/LTE. Build quality and design on the 5S is impressive.

I am a noob in buying these. Can someone explain?

So If I buy and call IVR in 3 days and pay full price, then do I cancel right away? and I don't have to keep the line for 2 months basically?

Do I cancel the service once I get the phone? or cancel the service before the phone is delivered?

Does it unlock to all carriers like ATT? After 60 days?
I also would like to know . I currently got a se2 , I would rather not loose my home button . I really am going too need a new phone soon.

Why all the hate for this phone? It's a 2022 model and is plenty fast for the market it's intended for. I own two of these and gave them to my 2 younger kids to keep in contact with them when they are with their friends, doing extracurricular activities, volunteering, etc. They love the phone and I love the price.

I upgraded from my old iPhone 6S to the SE3 about 6 weeks ago. I wanted to keep the home button as well. I really like the SE3; it's much faster and overall a great phone for my needs. Battery life is a bit lacking compared to the current status quo, and the software based home button takes some getting used to. But the price was right and I'm probably good for another 4-5 years of IOS support, which was the main reason I upgraded to a newer phone. If you're not a power user, the SE3 is a good choice for those who want 5G and IOS without spending a lot. The smaller size is just right for me, identical in dimensions to my old 6S. I bought a factory unlocked one to sidestep any issues with unlocking ($167 shipped).

Mediocre by today's standards. Expect a couple of days of light use between charges, or charging daily with heavier usage. There are some tutorials on YouTube that help you optimize settings for better battery life between charges.

Thanks. May considering doing this deal.

Gotta have the home button. Don't need/want a large phone.

I have an SE 2020 right now, but the battery is showing signs of weakness. I'm at 84% battery, which is still okay, but once you get to around 80 they recommend you replacing it. I don't trust any of these private shops to replace the battery with aftermarket stuff, so the only option is Apple for $80 or to get a new phone.

I just dunno how to avoid the activation fee. And you gotta pay tax on the retail price too. So it all adds up.

$99, plus $35 activation it says, plus tax on full retail I think, which is like $399.99 times my state's 6%. So it's more like $160.

I can wait a while longer. Maybe next time I'll get it for free cuz the phone will be 2.5 years old by BF.

Edit: Also an FYI, I just googled, and an Iphone SE 4 is being planned. The design is just rumored, so it's possible that they go a step up in size, without a home button.

It's rumored to be like an Iphone 14. If they made the phone similar to the 14 or so, they could probably reuse a lot of the same materials they already have on hand. But on the flip side, if you're going to use all that newer stuff, it kinda defeats the purpose of having a separate budget line, unless the new iphones are gonna start at $1000-1100, and the SEs are in the $500-600 range.

But in this economy, I don't think theyd do that.

To be safe, I'd probably still get an Iphone SE3 (2022), but later in the cycle.

I used to be a huge fan of the SE until I upgraded to the 12. I never looked back. In fact from time to time there's deals through Walmart with some carriers like Verizon or att for something like a 12 for the same price as this and those can be paid off anytime and unlocked.

Hmm. I dunno. I would personally say wait for an iPhone with an OLED screen because the battery life is double and you can get it for the same price.
Having an IPS instead of an OLED panel is exactly why I prefer the SE. I like to use my phones at low brightness and I can't stand PWM flickering.

You can check GSMArena. I have this phone and the battery life is not great, but it doesn't bother me at all. Unlike most people, I don't charge my phones overnight. I charge my SE in the office and in my car or in a rental car/plane when I'm traveling. I really don't see an issue unless you don't work in an office, are an outdoor person who enjoys a day hike/backpacking, or are relying on public transportation a lot. I'd recommend carrying a power bank with you in those situations.

I'd also rather buy the SE than the new iPhone 14 and 15 with a poorer quality battery. Of course, Apple may also downgrade the batteries in the future batches of SE.

Please donot spread wrong information. Tax is on $99. I paid $6 , per my state taxes. If you had not order then should not spread wrong information.

The inside of this phone is set up just like the 6-8 phones. You could watch a video and do it yourself. Batteries are 15 or less and work the same. I've done them.

I'm not clear on how this deal works. I would appreciate if someone can clarify.

I can buy the phone from Walmart for $99, but during that process I need to sign up for a new Verizon post paid plan which at minimum is 65$. Since I will go for a new line I can avoid the activation fee if I call within 3 days and pay in full?

So the total cost is approximately $99 + $65 + $6 (tax) = ~$170.

I can then not pay for the second month and then the phone will get unlocked in 60 days and I can put in say a Spectrum mobile sim card.

Does all this sound right?

I've noticed that the aftermarket iPhone batteries have gotten much better over the last 5 years or so, and I have had good luck with them. Generally they're as good or better than OEM when it comes to capacity and lifespan, in my experience. Definitely worth a try if the battery is the only issue on a relatively modern phone like the SE2. I would expect at least 2 years from an aftermarket battery purchased on Amazon, with any luck. Plenty of videos out there on how to do the replacement. My 6S was on its third battery when I retired it, still showing 100% battery health almost a year after installation.
