b. these kits have been available at around $115 many times. i paid $107 for this kit at maxtool (an authorized dealer) back in december.
they are 21700 sized Samsung T30 cells. each battery has 10 of them inside. bare T30s sell for about $6 a pop in quantities under 100. that's $120 worth of batteries alone, with no BMS, case or anything else.
so by your own stupid logic, this is a good deal.

I got couple 6.0 and 8.0 HO that I rarely use but they do provide better power when I use it on my leaf blower.
Contact customer service for a replacement or simply return it to the store of purchase?
For my "bad" battery putting it on the charger would immediately indicate it was done charging. Pushing the battery test button would show it was 1/2 full. On a tool like a drill, it would barely move. It was a very lightly used battery, since I have a stash of 5Ah batteries from a deal a few years ago - but old enough that it was out of MILW warranty.
Opening it up - one cell was fully charged, one cell had half that voltage, rest were partially discharged. Charged it with a lithium battery charger, one cell at a time following directions found online. Since then it's functioned fine - holds a good charge, normal Milwaukee charger works as expected.
If you're going to try and fix "bad" tool battery pack, make sure you do your research, understand what you're doing and keep it safe.
My suggestion is to be careful to not buy more batteries than you reasonably can use - because I've never had an issue with batteries that are actively being used. Only seen these issues with batteries sitting around idle doing the self-discharge thing.
That said, I'm tempted to ignore that advice and get some more 6Ah batteries I don't immediately need - but I'm also working at throwing the idle batteries on the charger periodically as well as a preventative.

It happened after I ran it completely empty on an led light that I rigged up to work with M18 batteries. I'll need to wire in some sort of low voltage protection next time.

The high output batteries are capable of outputting more amps so you get more power at the same voltage.
There are test videos on youtube showing impact wrenches putting out more torque with these batteries compared to the normal version.
