Solid deal but OOS for me. You can get the M2 mini from Apple student store for $500 without any student verification required.

These consume so little power at idle (not to mention being very efficient under load) which make them very useful for running background tasks 24/7.

I know, right? No way in hell I can even attempt to get to Fairfax VA to try and snag one. And I'm one state over.

Your i7 was released 7 years ago, so yeah it's slower and runs hotter. Looking at PC hardware today, you can get a mini PC comparable to this Apple for about the same price, so it's not the hot deal it might once have been.

Comparing to an I5 released at the same time, the single core speed was about 20% faster (it's about the same today is a I5-14400) and the multi-core is about 15% slower. While using 15w vs 65w (except intel has started fudging these numbers so in reality most Intels use way more than their rating).

So no on release the M1 was pretty revolutionary, and I say that as someone who hates Apple and Mac. Hitting 20% faster single core with 25% of the power use is pretty damned incredible. Even comparing to a modern 14400 the M1 honestly looks even better. Sure single core speed is 20% slower and multi core is 46% slower but the Intel's power usage jumps to LITERALLY 10 TIMES the power. So a I5 released 3 years later is using 10 times the power to achieve 50% better multi core and 20% better single core. Pretty mediocre.

Picked up the last one and it was 16gb ram instead of 8gb. They matched the price of the 8gb as a courtesy. Thanks Op!

Better for many in the Apple ecosystem to spend $499 on the M2 Mac Mini (2023) and get a $100 gift card, bringing net down to $399 (plus tax on $499). 3 more years support, a bit more speed, a bit better codec support.

One thing to consider is the storage is up to 50% slower on the 256GB M2 since it's one chip versus two 128GB chips on the 256GB M1. Won't matter for most people though.

No. Just, no. No more fearmongering.

It won't matter for most people, so please let's stop endlessly repeating it. The difference between 1500MB/s and 3000MB/s for most people approaches nil; most people still find the 500MB/s of a normal SATA SSD to be perfectly fine speedwise.

I would get a 2023 model (M2 Mini) long before I got a 2020 (M1 mini) model, simply because that near-guarantees me 3 more years of MacOS updates, which is far more likely to be important to any would-be buyers.

Curious what are you using it for? I was thinking of getting one for a nas/plex box.

It's not a bad idea if it's cheap (and this is) but do bear in mind that other threads mention NewEgg and fully 8/256 "loaded" (as far as Plex needs...) N100 Celeron CPUs (which, with PlexPass, are very, very fast for 4k and under HW transcoding), going for $99.

That's a cheap, good Plex server. Plug in a 22TB USB drive with media content, and you're off to the races.
