Solid deal but OOS for me. You can get the M2 mini from Apple student store for $500 without any student verification required.

These consume so little power at idle (not to mention being very efficient under load) which make them very useful for running background tasks 24/7.

I know, right? No way in hell I can even attempt to get to Fairfax VA to try and snag one. And I'm one state over.
1 available in Fairfax. You can hold it, but checking out online. I find that more stock is available in Rockville. Don't know which state you are in though, WV or NC.

Should we just go with the m2 over m1? Is saving $120 worth the difference?
If I remember correctly, the base M1s have dual SSD chips giving them double read/write performance vs. base M2s which are single chips, so in scenarios that require a lot of SSD read/write's the M1s are actually faster.

M2's use the dual chip model for any storage upgrades beyond base. M3+ I believe they went back to the dual SSD model for base storage.

Ok deal, but savings of $120 for a 4 year old computer compared to the M2 isn't great. Rumors of an M4 before the end of this year as well.

Not worth my money, 4 year old mac. 8gb ram and 256 gb SSD. Like seriously, who can use it for 2 plus years, Upgradeable ram, SSD? Future proof?

Alright understood but that's not what you initially said. It sounded like they might all be gone by the time you get there.

100 percent this! The M1 base is superior for the exact reason you pointed out. M1 was before Apple started with the SSD shrinkflation. I would buy M1 base over M2 base every time

Original release date matters a lot less than the actual performance difference, which as mentioned above, can actually be slower for the base model M2 due to the SSD changes. Also, the M1 came out 3.5 years ago and is only 2.2 years older than the M2.

I see 349.99. I'm still using a couple 2014 minis just fine though, basically for streaming
