Solid deal but OOS for me. You can get the M2 mini from Apple student store for $500 without any student verification required.

These consume so little power at idle (not to mention being very efficient under load) which make them very useful for running background tasks 24/7.

8gb is barely enough ram for basic stuff. Don't listen to apple's BS about their new chips not needing adequate sounding RAM. I have a mini with 8gb and one with 16gb and it's a night and day difference.
8GB on a Mac is completely different than 8GB on a PC. 8GB on a Mac, you can use Logic and Final Cut without issue.

M2 Mac Mini came out then I saw a slick deal about the EDU and Giftcard combo.

$599 - $100 EDU instant discount - $100 Gift card = $399
My trade in for Mac Mini was $305. So the upgrade was $399 - $305= $94?
Maybe I calculated it wrong now I am thinking about it more.

This was the M2 order. It was total of $200 off from $599 list price right?

$399 - $255 = $145 cost to upgrade to one generation newer.

I wouldn't do it, and I probably wouldn't do it for $99 either, but I understand the thought process of those who would.

Bought this model and had so many problems with the 8GB ram that I had to sell it. Do not recommend this base model whatsoever.

Planning to do it with M4, not M2 after purchasing this, but another hit will be lower trade in during that period because of M1 to M4; FML 🤦 ♂️

Constant Kernel panics that made the system restart randomly when running applications like Plex due to RAM. These M1 devices are efficient, I have an M1 MacBook. But with little RAM it cripples the device and causes issues. It's dumb that they even sell an 8gb model.

I think the $200 back to school off from $599 was the best thing. That's a whooping 33% off!

Sorry, no. A KP isn't a RAM issue, and a RAM issue won't KP. If Plex KP's the machine, there's an issue with the underlying OS (or hardware) and how Plex calls or uses a MacOS function (or the machine had bad hardware).

In a brief look I don't see other Plex Mac users complaining of KPs, so I suspect you had a hardware problem. A case with Apple to repair would be a logical next step.

Just how, exactly, did you come to the conclusion any of this had anything to do with RAM?

As you've seen in this thread, people are doing vastly more than a dead simple Plex server on 8GB Mac mini hardware. Sorry you had an issue, but it looks like it was unique to you.

Actually you are right and we get M2 (in AUG when that extra $100), in that case, shall we skip this deal?

Actually, I agree on this!!!

RAM abnormalities have different symptoms not the ones he mentioned.

Do you expect them to reprogram the phone? "Reimaging" / Reset is a normal, basic t-shooting step for those not able to do it themselves. Typically that solves most problems, but if it doesn't (with no third party apps installed) then it becomes a hardware problem, and only then.

And yes, they have by far the best support in the business. Please define exactly what support you would get from Hauwei or OnePlus Android phones? "Even" Samsung is a disaster compared to Apple Support. The fact that you can even complain about it by walking into a Genius Bar (which isn't offered via other vendors) is a riot.
Agree!

Funny right…

Isn't it always the people who shits on apple genius bar but had to take their phone in to get help?

I don't remember the last time I needed to get anyone at GB to help me fix/reset my iPhone…

Mac 8GB can also small LLM say 3GB version. It would kill the cpu on the 8GB PC machines with integrated graphics cuz CPU will go to 100% completely while the Mac will consume the GPU and you can still the Mac to browse the web no issues.

Eventually this will be parity as NPU is used though one all of the new PC cpus switches to the new gen snapdragon intel and amd chips that just got announced
