Solid deal but OOS for me. You can get the M2 mini from Apple student store for $500 without any student verification required.

These consume so little power at idle (not to mention being very efficient under load) which make them very useful for running background tasks 24/7.

BNIB Isn't horrible at this price. But def check used/open box elsewhere. Can be much cheaper. I got a open box Mac Mini M2 base model for $424 from Micro Center last may.

Happened years ago, there's a Walmart Fresh market at Mercado Santa Clara where they used to be. Unfathomable that it would close, but I imagine greedy landlords and cheap ass engineers took it out ultimately.
Microcenter will be opening a new location later this year in Santa Clara (Stevens Creek and Lawrence).

What?! How?! I would think that would be their best store.
It really was nice when it first opened, but within a few years it just got boring... Old inventory, lame prices, uncompetitive... I was not surprised to see it go. It will be nice to see it come back, and I wish them luck, but I'm very doubtful of their chances.

And if you use Red Card you can buy GCs for it at $95/100 unless they have changed something. Every now and then (abotu every 3 months) target also has get 5-10 back in Target GCs on Apple GC purchases which would push this down to 425-450 for a M2 mini which is bonkers.

Matter of fact Target is running the $10 right now lol. So $95.50 per $100 GC+$10 in Target GCs back. Assuming you can still buy multiples like every prior time they ran this deal that would put you to $477.50+tax for a M2 Mini plus $50 in Target GCs which imo are same as cash really.

8GB on a Mac is completely different than 8GB on a PC. 8GB on a Mac, you can use Logic and Final Cut without issue.
I mostly browse the web, run a Plex and channels server (minor use), and a couple smaller apps, pixelmator by far being the most resource intense. I am constantly out of memory.

Wasn't the M1 super hyped back in the day? In the end it was as powerful as a low-end Intel i5. The M2 is barely any better.

While this is true, it doesn't tell the whole story.

I'm sitting next to a wind tunnel of an i7-8700 (not even k…) pc that can be heard across the house. The Mac mini is 1/5 the size, silent all the time, uses 1/10 the power, and is far faster per core. It's about as fast as a current gen i5 12400 or so per core, being slower in MC.

There are many nice things about the hardware.

Your i7 was released 7 years ago, so yeah it's slower and runs hotter. Looking at PC hardware today, you can get a mini PC comparable to this Apple for about the same price, so it's not the hot deal it might once have been.

Oh I would never suggest Apple hardware is a hot deal compared to the rest of the market unless you need what it offers, like battery life and Messages chat and the other stuff.

But Apples upcoming (expected, not certain) $100 edu coupon certainly doesn't hurt….

checking available memory (I know Mac likes to use most of what's available and only delegatee less when forced) and just real world issues that require new closing windows so apps don't slow or have trouble.

But what's happening with the swapfile? Everything you fully describe is normal and not indicative of a problem yet.

I don't know what a swap file is. All I can say is that from real world experience I can do far more without any degradation in performance on my 16gb M2 than my 8gb M1 and I'm not doing crazy things. Mostly web browsing, emails and MS office.
