Which one is better? https://www.costco.com/roland-frp...86636.html
This is a costco sku of roland's fp-10 piano. It has a better polyphony than fp-10 but you can compare the specs online. They both have the same keys but fp-30x has few more features. You can't go wrong with either.

I have this. The bench is not bad. It's sturdy, and comfortable. Only drawback is the height adjustment step is large (almost 2 inches).

The X stand, pedal, and headphone are all basically unusable. Still, it's a good deal.

The FP-30x has more keyboard voices, ports, and polyphony as well as better speakers. The headphones, pedal, and seat are lackluster with the FP-30x bundle, but I think the added value from the keyboard functions makes up for the difference
isn't the costco pedal actually worse than the FP-30x?

Is this overkill for my 8 yo kid to learn on? or is it a good one for him to grow into?
Short answer yes. Longer answer, I would get something else for a kid. ost people will recommend getting a full size keyboard with weighted keys and pedals to closely simulate a real piano. Most other interments have child size versions for a reason. Kids a smaller, have smaller fingers, and lack strength. I learned on a real piano as a kid and absolutely hated the experience and it turned me off until I was much older. My son had a similar experience. He found piano frustrating so he quit it. He also had a child size drum set which he enjoyed playing until he was ready to move to full size drum sets.

If I were to do it over again. I would have looked for something that ticks the following boxes:
- Mini keys. Easier reach for small fingers.
- Non-weighted keys. Allows longer play without getting tired.
- USB MIDI or Bluetooth MIDI. Allows easy interface to computer/tablet so they can run "fun" teaching software like Yousician rather than having to use a microphone (less accurate) or resort to learning from boring paper books.
- Does not need to be 88 keys. 49 keys is more than sufficient if there are buttons to shift octaves. A smaller size is easier set up/take down and store. I would not necessarily seek out a keyboard with fewer keys but would not feel compelled to get one with 88 keys.

What pedal then?

I threw the stand away but now realizing the pedal isn't great.

It was still a great deal for $570. Very happy with the 30x.

The Yamaha pianos have better sounds at this price point, but you'd need to get a stand and everything separate. So it would be a bit more expensive. If you're looking for a starter piano, this one is good. Just make sure whatever piano you get has hammer action so you know how hard to hit the keys for dynamics. That's pretty much it for beginners.

Digital piano noob here. I want to record what I'm playing, play it back and then play over the playback and record that. It appears I do that with an ipad and an app. Do I have that right? TIA!
