I have never encountered a Gen 1 in the wild, so I have no comparison to the sound of our Gen 2. That being said, considering the praise for the sound quality of both, I was initially disappointed at how little low end the Gen 2 HomePod had. Great clarity and quality, but thin, tinny sound--for the most part. I had purchased a refurb from Apple at the time, after troubleshooting with support they swapped it out on the guess that something was wrong with it. The replacement sounded about the same, maybe ever so slightly better.

After a few weeks of living with it I happened to stumble across the culprit while playing classical: Apple Music ATMOS. I had played an older classical piece that was non-ATMOS, and it had depth and satisfying bass. I then happened to play the Star Wars: A New Hope theme song for my boys, and it sounded awful--weak, thin. Compared the two, saw the older track was not ATMOS. Turned off ATMOS in the Home app settings, and the Star Wars theme sounded great, proper body and depth to the song. Maybe this isn't an issue with stereo pair HomePods, I only have one so I can't test that. I would say it is worth turning off ATMOS in the Home app if you run a single HomePod Gen 2 to see if it makes a difference:

Home app > three-dot circle in the upper right > Home Settings. Under the People section, tap your Apple account name. Under Connected Media, tap Apple Music. Toggle off Dolby ATMOS.

Just bought two of these. Pairing these to an Apple TV unit sounds really nice.

I have one too… I'm just saying you won't find a new gen 1 to buy anywhere.

Oh I'd love to be wrong! They were quoting this "You may return or exchange wireless devices and accessories within 30 days of purchase. A restocking fee of $50 applies to any return or exchange of a wireless device (excluding Hawaii)" and saying it qualified as a wireless accessory
I guarantee you no restocking fees on accessories. You can even return it to any verizon corporate store

Agent is telling me the $50 restock fee applies to this. Since I've never tried on I'm gonna pass of the chance I'm not a fan.

"At this time, Verizon is not able to complete your transaction with your current payment method. Please select a new payment method in order to continue."

Tried multiple methods. All get this error. Dead?

Got the same, check with your CC, Chase thought mine was a fraudulent charge.

I just can't decide whether this is worth switching from Alexa. We have all apple devices except for the HomePod (phones, iMac, Mac, Apple TV). Any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks

Wondering similar as we have a pair of Echo Studios to stream Spotify to. They sound ok, not great. Wondering if these HomePods would be a big improvement or not.

In for two. Apple refreshing lineup supposedly with a new display screen, but who cares at half cost. You aren't walking up and looking at them anyways.

You can sweeten this deal by using the AMEX Offer of 10% back on Wireless Bill if you've it.

I received email confirming this after the transaction went through.

YMMV of course.

While Siri functionality is kinda meh, the speaker and sounds quality is remarkable.
