I installed a 100W ecoworthy panel with an ecoworthy charge controller and 40 AhHr LiPo battery for outdoor lighting and it has been great so far ( Too be fair, I did this project in April). I do expect the cost of solar panels to double once the China tariffs kick in since there is no low end domestic solar manufacturing in the USA.
The 200W bi-facials are $100.62 w/ coupon, too:

Yeah, but most of the time you'll pay $200 shipping and have to order 10 of them.

Ditch lead acid batteries for a 100AH lifepo4 battery. It will last you several thousand charge cycles and you can fully discharge it, unlike lead acid, which can only be discharged 50% or damage will occur.
Lead acid is way better for very cold climates.

I have a 12v 50 watt submersible pump for the pond, which draws 7amps.

This panel is 12V and max current is 10.83A (which I understand it's usually less).

Can I hook that pump directly to this panel without using a voltage regulator/converter? I also don't want to use any battery or controller. I just want a very simple set up.

I'm ok if the pump only runs when it's sunny or mostly sunny, I'm in southern CA and gets lots of sun.

Thanks! and sorry for the newbie question.

this is the pump i want to use:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...NZFV&psc=1
I want to do the same thing.
Any tips suggestions would be very welcome
Thanks

Just what I was going to say. And, they can get wet, hot, cold, frozen, and live to tell the tale.
(there is a limit for all batteries when frozen comes to mind. A cracked case will make things a real mess.)

LiPo4 is the better battery, within certain uses. Outside of those uses, lead acid is hard to beat. Plus, one can get factory seconds for around $50.

If i want to sustain 2000 KWH per month how many 100w panels would I need assuming 4 hrs of full sun each day? I can pad the panels around the guestimation but the product vs Google are telling me vastly different things making me think I need either 10 or 60 and there's no way both can be right...

I'm considering six packs and installing them on the gazebo. I'm not sure if 4 of them are enough to run the lights

200 of them

Actually, just saw the part about 4 hours of sun.

You need at least 400.

You need bigger panels, closer to 600W each

To produce 2000 kwh per month you need roughly 2750 watts continuously 24/7.

So that means you need to produce 66,000 watt hours per day. Take that 66,000 and divide by the hours of 100% panel output to get the system size.
4 hours of full output at 16,500 watts will give you 66kwh in a single day.

What?
My local Interstate Battery dealer will sell factory seconds for $50 - if he has any.
Or, pay $100 for new.

I will say that I have no idea what's going on in the world of batteries.
3 months ago I bought a battery for my pickup and it was $150.
Went to a parts dealer and bought 4 950 cca batteries for $100 each.

No? I retired to TN, wide open spaces, trees, I own a few acres, enough that I don't live on top of my neighbors. If I drive by the suburbs and see houses stacked on top of each other I just cringe and can't believe I used to live like that! I suppose you can find less populated areas in the colder climates to but then you have to deal with the cold Stick Out Tongue What don't you like about the south?

For my 600W camper trailer solar setup last July, I ended up trying 4 brands off Amazon. Lower cost ones, but not the rock bottom cheapest. 1 brand didn't put out anywhere near rated output. I mean around 60% in direct, clear, perpendicular sun tests. 70-75% another, 80% another, and 90% on 1. Ideal condition test, granted. Done through the MPPT controller I was going to use, so a more real world test.

The point being, easy Amazon returns make this kind of testing possible.

NREL's calculator uses location and seasonal data. Great tool for this exact kind of calc.
