regret my chromebook purchase so much... the os is so trash. i duno. I needed to reformat a ssd.. just delete the contents(connected via a usb adapter).. chromeOS couldn't even do that.

that said.. I just logged into it after not using it for like a year and it now has software support until 2029 which is nice... it was supposed to end in 2024 i think. still a useless machine.
I had Samsung Chromebook Pro 2017 model I bought open box at Sams Club for around $179 and used it for 5 years with heavy browsing like looking up Slickdeals. I loved that machine. It was lightweight and the OS was unobtrusive. The touchscreen was very nice. I realized I like touchscreen on my laptops. The keyboard was one of the best in laptops I have used since Powerbook G5. I would have continued using that Chromebook but Google expired it last year August. I did continue using it in spite it not having updates etc. It still worked albeit slowly. There were more crashes. Best Buy had this Lenovo Chromebook open box last Memorial weekend I bought it for $184 and it works well. It has touchscreen. Very good screen. Nice thing is I am able to do phone texting on my Chromebook (which I know you can do on big laptops). I just dislike Windows operating system. Have to use it at work. I have the big laptop Lenovo that uses Xeon chips. It is very heavy and hot on the bottom and so not appropriate on the lap or on the bed. The screen is not touchscreen. it is great for video editing or photography. Not for regular browsing. Realized that having a small Chromebook is great for in between for basic communication and browsing and occasional YouTube or video etc.

I'll be honest... A backlit keyboard is almost a requirement for me and touchscreen is not something I really ever use. The one I have is also a Spin model whose function I rarely, if ever, use. I would recommend looking for the fastest Chromebook with the most RAM and best processor in your price range.

Agreed. If this had a backlit keyboard, I'd probably get it just to get the 1-year of AI.

What the difference between the cpu on this Chromebook vs their regular Intel i3 cpu? I sometimes see Acer regular i3 Core go on a sale for $279.
regular i3 is faster. ai generated comparison isn't that accurate. found refurbished i3-1215u Acer Plus 515 for $200 at target.

Intel i3 1215u vs n305
The Intel Core i3-1215U and i3-N305 are both entry-level mobile processors from Intel's Alder Lake-N series. While they share some similarities, they have distinct differences in terms of architecture, performance, and power consumption. Here's a breakdown of the key differences:
Architecture:
The Intel Core i3-1215U is based on the Alder Lake architecture, which features 2 performance cores (P-cores) and 4 efficient cores (E-cores).
The Intel Core i3-N305, on the other hand, is based on the Alder Lake-N architecture, which features no performance cores and 8 efficient cores (E-cores).
Performance:
The Intel Core i3-1215U has a higher clock speed, with a base clock speed of 1.2 GHz and a turbo boost clock speed of up to 3.4 GHz.
The Intel Core i3-N305 has a lower clock speed, with a base clock speed of 1.8 GHz and a turbo boost clock speed of up to 3.8 GHz.
Power Consumption:
The Intel Core i3-1215U has a higher power consumption, with a base power consumption of 15 W and a maximum power consumption of 25 W.
The Intel Core i3-N305 has a lower power consumption, with a base power consumption of 15 W and a maximum power consumption of 25 W.
Benchmarks:
According to various benchmark tests, the Intel Core i3-1215U outperforms the Intel Core i3-N305 in most tests, with a slight margin.
However, the Intel Core i3-N305 is still a capable processor and can handle everyday tasks and general productivity with ease.
Conclusion:
The Intel Core i3-1215U is a more powerful processor with a higher clock speed and better performance in most benchmarks.
The Intel Core i3-N305 is a more power-efficient processor with a lower power consumption and a more affordable price tag.
Ultimately, the choice between the two processors depends on your specific needs and preferences. If you prioritize performance and are willing to sacrifice power efficiency, the Intel Core i3-1215U may be the better choice. If you prioritize power efficiency and are looking for a more affordable option, the Intel Core i3-N305 may be the better choice.
Here are some real-world benchmarks to give you a better idea of the performance difference between the two processors:
Geekbench 5: Intel Core i3-1215U - 1,434 (single-core), 4,341 (multi-core); Intel Core i3-N305 - 1,244 (single-core), 3,441 (multi-core)
Cinebench R23: Intel Core i3-1215U - 1,144 (single-core), 3,441 (multi-core); Intel Core i3-N305 - 1,044 (single-core), 3,141 (multi-core)
PCMark 10: Intel Core i3-1215U - 4,341 (home, 3,141 (work); Intel Core i3-N305 - 3,941 (home), 2,941 (work)
Keep in mind that these benchmarks are just a snapshot of the processors' performance and may not reflect real-world usage.

Thanks! Looks like buying an Acer laptop with a regular i3 CPU is a better deal than buying an Acer Chromebook.

Really depends on use case, and if the specific model is underpowered, some of my family prefer the ease of use and lightweight OS for web and email on a more traditional form factor vs a tablet.

How much do you need a backlit keyboard?
I find I work mostly in decent lighting conditions, so haven't noticed a need at all.. remote controls are a different thing, definitely good to have backlighting..

Do you use the laptop in low light conditions?

I'm in for one.
I just sold my Win laptop and waiting for Copilot+ laptops to be released.
I was always curious about ChromeOS - so it's a good time to try it.
and you know it's Costco.. 90 days..

Let me know if you end up returning. I'm genuinely curious as to how many Chromebook users return them lol. My mistake was not returning within the best buy window 😭
