don't get this, myQ sucks - they paywall some of their features with a subscription

and they recently shut off access to their APIs, generally very anti-consumer

if you want a solid alternative, look at the Tailwind iQ3 [gotailwind.com] which is a universal smart controller which will work with most any garage door(s)

If you really really really need 1.25 HP (and you shouldn't) then it's okay I guess. Ideally your garage door is balanced with springs so any given 1/2 HP unit should suffice. Then there's the camera which I don't know for sure but someone mentioned a subscription necessary. Lastly the battery which looks like $50-$60 to replace however often that may be. Personally I just have the standard 1/2 HP belt drive unit with the smart app and I am fine with it.

For recording yes. But works fine without the subscription for live streaming and motion notifications. Speaker and mic work great.

This. Don't do this seriously.

The fact that they have done so means they know they can get away. What's free today would all be subject to change - some corporate suit that is greedy and can make the decisions will eventually figure out a way to push you into subscription for whatever feature that is free today.

Or the other way, in 2035 they will say, "the premium you paid in 2024 for the smart will be down the drain because our server cannot support your 2024 hardware any more and we will have to shut down the features you have paid in the very beginning."
Welcome to literally everything with any sort of 'smart' to it. Free at first, low cost at the start and then eventually a premium cost only to be turned off eventually.

You might escape this model for a few more years but there is no stopping the 'everything as a service' model that is coming for just about everything that can be monetized.

I bought this opener through the Home Depot $50 install deal in another thread because my opener is a 23 year old Liftmaster Pro+ is on its last legs.

Can I buy this from Costco and buy the same one from Home Depot then use the $50 install then return the Home Depot one later?

By doing what you propose, you are basically stealing from Home Depot. So the answer is no.

I swore off all MyQ since they decided to kill all common smart home integration. HomeKit, google assistant, API, even matter. They see dollar signs with their OWN ecosystem, so they are as anti consumer to the max to get it established.

Does this have a timer-to-close feature that can automatically close the door if it is open for x minutes? Possible to set it up with the remote or the app? If through app, does this feature need a subscription? Thanks to anyone who can answer this.

$199 at your local store.
I think this is online only. The one in stores is probably not the 1.25HP model.

I know that you can set reminders that the door is open for x amount of time. Have not seen the auto close feature in the app.

You can buy/build a Ratgdo, but yeah, these are features that should be included natively. Better than paying a subscription, at least.
I've got a ratdgo... but it's kind of stupid that I had to spend an extra $30 to do things that are already available in the hardware I bought. Bonus on the Ratdgo - it will also allow you to control the light and gives you access to the motion sensors. I'm pretty sure you'll be SOL on the camera though.

That's a fair cry of an interpretation. Get off the morality high horse. No laws are broken there and actually quite clever.

This with no installation or pay a bit more and get $49 installation fr home depot? Install isn't just hooking it up, with these you have to calibrate and adjust bunch of things so it doesn't break anything trying to close and push all Tha t 1.25 hp force on your belt or rails.

Now here's an SDer using his noggins. Let us know if you pull this off. The only thing I can see could be a glitch is if the home depot cs person checks and see that the install was completed that could raise a flag.
