I have my old one in storage and was curious if it would still be able to do anything at all if connected online, like download digital game purchases that were already purchased years ago, or did they force people to buy the newer systems to do that.

Two digital only consoles and a "special limited release" disc console with 2TB storage, for $599.99. Clearly they are funneling people into the cheaper digital only consoles going forward. Unsure if these older disc models will end up going up in price over time or not, since it seems like less physical release games are being released at the same time. I wanted to get a Xbox One X, but I just don't see the benefit over PC + Game Pass, first generation I've skipped on Xbox.

I do think at some point (say, 3 years from now) it's worth it to snag a Series X at a deep discount as I think this will be Microsoft's last console to support physical media. But I don't know that these will retain their value like Nintendo consoles do. Discs were never a great way to play or preserve physical media anyway.
