Ban won't matter if you already bought it

It's not to protect you. It's because American drone manufacturer's cannot compete due to higher price and shittier product. So they lobbied the politicians to ban DJI. Lobbying is how most things are done at the Capitol.

I thought the ban was going to interfere with the communication with the drone. Making it useless if you already have one?

You're using cached data, but that will eventually expire and you will need new data and you'll be both blocked and geofenced out, the same reason you can't take off a DJI drone in any prohibited area today as is.

The only difference is that instead of just being geofenced out of near airports or parks, the entire US will be geofenced, effectively bricking the device for domestic use.

To buy a DJI drone this year is such a massive gamble, no one with a conscious would recommend it to anyone. And I'm not saying DJI drones are bad, they are the best, and for good reason they actually are subsidized by the Chinese government, and US government isn't lying when they are warning about that.

The Chinese government dumped $55.3 billion into them, so its no wonder they are leaders, and its also why world governments were scared that the Chinese government had a good reason so invest such a massive amount in surveillance drones that are "phoning home" information even though its housed on servers based in the US for this market (per the FBI and CISA investigation). I mean think on it, when is the last time Democrats and Republicans ever agreed on anything, and yet they are agreeing this is an issue, so if that doesn't tell you something, lol!
I have a DJI mini 1 and a Potensic Atom. I live in the DC burbs and can't fly the DJI anywhere. (Actually, I hacked it, but the geofencing defeat firmware seemed to make flying unstable.) My Potensic has zero geofencing restrictions out of the box. I could land it at Reagan or send it over the White House today if I didn't care about getting it back or getting arrested. Yet, the DJI is the one that stands to get banned. πŸ˜„

Damn. Just found out I live within the radii a bunch of helicopter pads, designated as no fly zone. There goes my plan to use the drone to inspect the roof and drain.

I have a Mini 2 and the only thing I wish it had was active track. This does not have active track correct?
No it doesn't. Only the pro line has it.

No built-in screen. The screen controller is far superior from what users are saying.
Don't you put phone on top the controller?

Yes it is but it's also $160 more.

Pretty sure you can still use drone to inspect roof and drain. Your house can't be more than 10 meter tall.

Be aware, this only takes flight plus battery, not the mini 4's standard battery.

these are geofenced i presume? can't fly anything where i live, big no fly zone. the proposed ban is just on sales and not a nationwide geofence?
Depends what's geofenced. If it's like a hard geofence on a national park or something you're SOL, but if you're within 5 miles of an airport exemptions are *super* easy to request and often automated.

The local airport I have to fly within a few miles of regularly takes 30 seconds to get a temporary exemption using Autopylot.

As for the nationwide ban, the one proposed only applies for future drones, and I think there's a "cooldown" period before they're totally banned. I can't guarantee because I have no idea how the law might evolve, but currently it seems you'll be able to keep flying your already-bought DJI drones.

Can someone educate me how DJI drones are able to be flown in Ukraine if they're supposedly geo locked from operating in that area?

Also, if the DJI/China ban does go thru, are there any decent alternatives for non-Chinese drones?
Drones are designed to launch indoors, meaning GPS fix isn't required to fly. As soon as it's turned on, it'll try to get GPS fix but if it doesn't find good signal, it's assumed you're indoor and you can just fly. My educated guess is that Ukrainians can just remove the GPS antenna so the signal is always poor to get a fix. They can then fly with vision only.

"This means no new DJI products would be approved in the US going forward, cutting you off all the latest innovations by the company. And the DJI drones currently approved for the US may also be grounded in the future. The bill could also add any software capable of operating on DJI products to the Covered List, including software produced by US software developers, subjecting them to the same restrictions.

That said, it's important to note that the "Countering CCP Drones Act" is not likely to have an immediate impact on your current drone fleet and the software you use. However, we cannot ignore the fact that the FCC has the power to create a process to revoke the equipment authorizations for your existing drone models in the future.

As per the proposed legislation, the federal government could decide at any point that you are no longer allowed to fly the DJI drones or software that runs on DJI drones you have already purchased, no matter if you are flying for business, public safety, or even recreationally.

The drone maker estimates that the financial impact of such a ban could be as high as $116 billion. Cutting the leading manufacturer out of the drone market would also lead to rising costs and product shortages for all users. It also takes a life-saving tool out of the hands of first responders, putting lives on the line."

My Costco says in stock at the store, but when you do in store pickup it says I have to wait until next Thursday.. Why can't I just buy it online and pick up the same day? The reason I ask is because my cashback credit card is a mastercard which does work online but not in-store since costco instore only accepts visa.

Great. Once it was really passed, I will buy 4 more. It simply means the price will be through the roof on the secondary market.
