The point of play and charge kits is that you don't have to constantly swap batteries out to recharge them and that if the controller goes dead you can just plug it in and keep playing so they have a purpose. Now that side dock is stupid. Once you start pulling the battery packs out to charge them it defeats the purpose.

Any reason to use this over Panasonic eneloop AA batteries?

Yeah, I was going to get the charge stand that includes the two batteries, but that's just another "thing" to find space for. I think the Eneloop charger with 4 AA's is the smarter choice...

Really depends but imo not really if you already have Eneloops. I can see this being a great AIO solution for kids or for general ease of use. No need to go grab a separate charger, just plug in cable or place charger dock near console. Eneloops are way more versatile as a 4-pack though, can use them for anything not just controllers. Plus they are typically Japanese made afaik so the quality of the cells themselves are probably better. If you are near an IKEA they have rebranded Eneloops for cheap too

The play and charge kit simply isn't worth it. You can get 16 rechargeable AA batteries and a charger for 20 bucks on Amazon

The controller docks are nice when they work, but I have found that over time the spring mechanism under the charger connectors in the dock start weakening causing the contact connection to the controllers to be inconsistent.

You're absolutely right. With a plug-in charge battery you can literally plug your controller into any USB cable and never take batteries in or out and then if the battery pack does go bad you can easily replace it. It's a huge win for like 8 or 9 bucks. Sure save a couple dollars and use rechargeable double A's and mess with all that if you want, but the fact that nobody gets this is funny

I purchased something like this, I believe also from Best Buy, for about the same price for the One S. It has been going strong for years (e.g. well before Covid), but with minimal game play. My dock configuration is different, but it is nice to tell everyone that the controller goes on the dock ... instead of in the couch. And it just stays charged. So cheap for all the convenience. But that is me. I am surprised at how long the battery has lasted. This one is different than what I purchased.

Ikr. The convenience of not having to remove batteries can't be overstated. Who cares about battery capacity when you can charge and play?

I've stopped buying Insignia branded elctronics - they tend to crap out much more frequently than others. I have different branded versions of these battery packs and they work great with my controllers

Very cheap play and charge kit shipped, but if you want an even cheaper solution: here's a reminder that if you have dead batteries (or none) and you plug your controller into the Xbox you can also continue to play until the end of the match/game then replace the batteries (or continue to play but as a wired controller) but of course, the difference is having to swap batteries vs not, if that's worth $9 to you this is a good deal ❤️

I bought the side dock from a previous deal and have never been able to use it. To charge the batteries are supposed to be pushed down on a spring and locked in with the latch, well Ive never been able to get mine to latch. They always pop back out.

I have two controllers. Does it make sense to get one charging system or two play + charge kits?

With the dock I can just put the controllers on it when I'm not playing and they can charge.

But with the kit I get the cable which I can plug in if I run out of battery. I don't play enough that I will run out of battery currently and I like the idea of having dock instead of two long cables laying around.
