The point of play and charge kits is that you don't have to constantly swap batteries out to recharge them and that if the controller goes dead you can just plug it in and keep playing so they have a purpose. Now that side dock is stupid. Once you start pulling the battery packs out to charge them it defeats the purpose.

You can use the cover that came with the controller. The obvious downside is to get the internals to charge it, it's a smaller battery so it will die faster.
Okay, thanks. I decided to just order two Play + Charge kits. When I'm not playing I'll just plug them into the Xbox via the cables and leave them in my TV stand to charge.

If I got the Dock, I would have to make room it and would prefer the flexibility to put the controllers wherever I want.

Yup, I have a USB cord that comes out from behind my couch and we just charge with that so the gaming doesn't have to stop when the battery does. It works well enough.

Ended up going with the 2 Play + Charge kits, didn't want to take up additional space with the dock.

You're absolutely right. With a plug-in charge battery you can literally plug your controller into any USB cable and never take batteries in or out and then if the battery pack does go bad you can easily replace it. It's a huge win for like 8 or 9 bucks. Sure save a couple dollars and use rechargeable double A's and mess with all that if you want, but the fact that nobody gets this is funny
Who wants to play with wires?
You can get wireless controllers for $25 - $30 if you don't mind playing with wires
