Wet grass/mud in some places. You'd fall or slip when swinging/walking.

That being said, a lot of people play in tennis shoes (I used to play in my Yeezys).

As someone who doesn't play golf, what is the point of cleats (or knobby things under the shoe) for golf? What's wrong with regular tennis shoes? Am I really going to slip and mess up my game?

I've been wearing my new balance golf shoes for 5 years and they have over 100 rounds on them. They're not the "cool shoes" but they're dang comfortable

Just like most sports that have cleats, you don't NEED them. But they can be helpful. You don't always play on perfectly dry courses. There's weather from the day before. There's weather from the day you're currently playing. Sometimes, there's just morning dew.

The game is hard enough to get right when everything IS going your way. Your foot slipping doesn't help at all.

Short answer is no. But I have found spiked/knobbed golf shoes to be helpful climbing hills and getting in and out of bunkers... but that may be more because I'm just fat and uncoordinated Smilie

Yes. The golf swing is a rotation of your body, you do it by twisting against your feet. So even though you don't see it on the outside, there are significant rotational forces on your feet when you do the swing correctly.

if you don't feel those forces on your feet, you are likely swinging the club with your arms only (which is wrong)

You absolutely need traction in golf. The difference between a pure hit and a miss hit can be millimeters. How can you precisely swing a club and make good contact if you can't keep your footing? This is especially true with lower loft clubs (driver, woods, etc) and if you care to get any power behind your swing.

If you play in a dry climate, spikeless is probably fine (spikeless still have significantly increased traction over tennis shoes). In wet climates like Seattle, I'd argue spikes are almost critical.

New Balance has had a few pairs of golf shoes that have been high quality. In recent years, they seem to be more about quantity than quality. The first pair of New Balance I owned lasted 3 seasons, including waterproofing. The last two have had issues (worn out lining, waterproofing) before the end of a single season, golfing about once every two weeks.

👍🏽 for golf deals, but I really need a deal on some mesh/ breathable shoes. Summer in Texas is brutal!

Yes. Even in dry weather, if you generate enough torque, feet will slip. And you'll be in a variety if elevation and grass types.

You'd be amazed what a slight instability in your swing will do for your shot. Your stability in a sand bunker is about as bad as it gets, that is why you see people digging in their footing in the bunker to find a stronger base. Try swinging on top of the sand vs digging in... it's a lot like that.
