The one I bought from Sam's about 1.5mo ago for the same price (not sure why this is a frontpage slickdeal) came with USBA USBA 3.0 cable. The drive itself is USBA with the split connector, but 3.0 speeds. Not usbc.

Probably not -- even though it's 2024, everyone is legit asking for USB-C.....so many of these consumer devices are choosing to use an antiquated legacy format.

And since it's spinning rust, you probably couldn't even get the full USB3 type-A speeds from it, let alone anything befitting of the various USB-C higher speed protocols. 5400rpm (at best!) only reads/writes so fast.

Seems like prices on these Passport type drives hasn't dropped the last 3-4 years.

It's been this price at my Sam's Club since they've carried it.

Don't get this, for portable use just get ssd as it's much faster and durable. You might not use 5 tb all the time. Having a 1 or 2 tb ssd would work much better
Whoa, don't do this, flash memory is not good for long term storage, it needs to be regularly recharged, so it's the wrong medium for data backup.

This magnetic drive is perfect for backing up data.

Exactly the reason why I'm looking for one. But wouldn't having bare drives better for long term storage vs something like this.

Either is fine, I've never had one of these fail in 15 years.

Can these be shucked, or are these the ones that have the components soldered?

i doubt it's 2.0 but passports are a bit slow, better to just have it background backup. You don't want to use these for any kind of fast transfer.
