Anthem MRX1140 Audioholics bench test (link in prior post), $4199 MSRP:
Max power into 2CH 8 ohms is 153W <0.1% THD+N, max power into 2CH 4 ohms is 163W after being current limited by software (THD+N not specified).

Denon 6800 manuf specs, $3499 MSRP
Max power into 2CH 8 ohms is 140W @ 0.05% THD+N, max power into 2CH 6 ohms is 175W @ 0.7% THD+N (same specs as the Marantz Cinema 30 that costs $1k more)

Onkyo RZ70 manuf specs, $2799 MSRP
Max power into 2CH 8 ohms is 140W @ 0.08% THD+N, (4 ohms performance not listed but expected to do better than the RZ50)

I chose the 6800 and RZ70 because they have the same "on paper" 140W over 2CH performance into 8 ohms as the MRX 1140. Denons and Onkyos tend to do better than the "paper spec" so I'm calling performance across all 3 brands a wash at 8 ohms! Lower Denons like the 3800 and 4800 have shown they will not cut current on low impedance loads (ASR bench tests) so I expect the 6800 to outperform the 1140 at 4 ohms (jury is out for the RZ70 due to the RZ50 expose but one would hope it's not limited at nearly $3k).

Before room correction and any other mandatory "coloration" (i.e. Marantz), I expect all receivers to be neutral and sound similar to the same speaker so how an AVR is experienced "sonically" should be irrelevant (many of us prefer it this way). Once this is understood, the only other measurement by which we can make our choice would be how much raw power we can extract from the amp. The increased availability of low impedance speakers should make knowing the above specs a high priority when pushing the limits of a movie/music soundtrack.

If you really desire the warm "Marantz sound", simply perform a -2.5 dB rolloff from 13k to 20k Hz per the attached diagram (can easily be done in Audyssey, Dirac, etc).

I had hoped the MRX 1140 would be a lot better than the MRX 1120 but it appears to be more of the same. Although the power supply is slightly beefier, the same software limit is present for low impedance loads. Not sure if I'd pay close to $4k just for the badge as there are many other better performing AVRs in this price range!

If all the bells and whistles are your priority Anthem might not be your best bet, sonically speaking they are great and provide pretty good bang for your buck, at least in my experience. They tend to be one gen behind when it comes to catching up with all the new features, but as far as quality this are solid. Likewise for Paradigm

Bells and whistles are not my priority, sound is. I love the sound of my MRX1120, which is why I picked up the 1140 for 4k 120Hz support. I didn't think video from one source and audio from another would be considered a fancy feature. They were almost there with the 1120 and ability to pair HDMI video with Coax/Toslink/Analog audio. It's just HDMI video with different HDMI audio what was missing.

Kinda agree, more isn't always better/optimal in this aspect, in my experience.
This is especially true when you factor in the extra cost.

The quality of your speakers in every position, proper placement of them and room environment plays a much bigger importance on SQ than your AVR does imo.

Most home layouts can't/won't support an optimal 11 channels.
Most common/popular is 7.1(2).4 https://www.dolby.com/siteassets/..._setup.pdf

If you can't/won't follow that, you're better off following the one you can imo.

You're better off investing in improving speakers and treatments 1st before some fancy AVR if you want to improve SQ imo.
i certainly don't need an 11.2 system and would much prefer the 740, but the 740 doesn't offer independent subs. i'm grappling with the notion on whether i should spend an extra $800 - $1000 for that luxury, tho, and settle for the 740.

at any rate, this is one consideration when asking why consumers would even consider the 1140.

You could buy a umik, miniDSP & REW and manually calibrate your subs.
Many people are satisfied with doing that, some even prefer to do that.

It's all subjective, just look at how popular Dirac Live is on these mid level AVRs and almost everyone sees no need/benefit for Dirac's bass management/control, they are very satisfied without it.
Those all have parallel/mono sub outs also.

If you don't need 11 channels and after Anthem's sound.
The 740 here is a good way to get it.
I doubt you will hear a $800-$1000 difference between the two imo.
