To add to this, fireOS has been getting progressively worse as time goes by. They are being more intrusive with ads and locking the system down. If you have any desire to customize anything I'd steer clear. The new Onn 4k Pro unit seems to be much more open for now. It may not have the same processor , but it operates smooth and has 32GB storage on board with a USB port for expansion. Plus the Onn unit is only $49.99 at wally world.

I was just going to ask about the FireStick 4k Max comparison.

What are the practical differences between the sticks and the cubes?

Idk why people complain about ads too much. It's Amazon we are talking about. You either pay more and go with Apple TV (no sideloading) and have no ads, or pay dirt cheap and deal with Amazon. I personally have no issues with Amazon Home Screen. Once you disable the auto play, it becomes a static image. And sometimes those are just suggestions, not even ads. I find them useful when I am in need of a new movie or tv show.

This is the most powerful Fire TV you can buy and it has 16gb of storage. It has speakers and microphones built-in, plus you get HDMI in port. It's super easy to sideload apps. Let me add two more things, if you like Fire TV, this is the only model with AI upscaling and 16gb of storage.

It's not for everyone, but I certainly enjoy Fire TVs!

This box is (very surprisingly) one of the best in tweens of codec/app support for Atmos content.

Cube 2nd Gen supports Dolby Atmos as well. I have it setup as a Home Theater with 2 Echo Studios and Echo Sub. Wish it supported at least 5.1 setup using echo devices or 5.1.2 with the Studio.

Consumer Reports [consumerreports.org] rated this Cube 3rd just behind the NVidia Shields, beating Roku, Google, and Apple.

Ratings are not actually viewable online unless you are a paying CR member, which sucks.

The 3rd gen cube is on sale for $110. Take another 20% off on a trade in,and it puts a new one for $90-98. or so.. So it makes it a good deal, but you have to wonder why a current device is a refurb.. idk..

I find my self looking for another device at the moment, but I hate the sticks.. A proper USB port for devices (Camera?), a real power supply but even with a crippled (100) ethernet it is still are nice on the 3rd gen cube. But I think I have to try the $50 32gb onn box before I buy another cube though. We have been trying to deal with cripplrd HW long enough.

Arg.. the wallymart remote is not as sturdy as the amarzon one. The komcrap streamey app does not work either on cromecast klones.. I like fire remotes. Nothing is perfect!.

The storage is what I fight with the sticks and a 16gb storage on a $130 cube is insulting when ONN has twice that at less than 1/2 the price every day, not on sale. . So stingy? Why?

Off hand, I think I pass on the 3rd gen cube untill the walwart effect takes hold.

Tempted to get this too but as others have said the eco system is way to leveraged with data capture and that is not good. Fire tv has the xfantacy app for com crap. Play sore does not if you want to use the "xfarteny app" on your internet based tv. Nothing is perfect.

Things should not have to be so complicated. I dont trust Amerzon to install a app without a hidden subscription agreement. It was so simple once.

I am getting a antenna. I dont trust my tv on the internet. I am air gaping it. It wont stop them from editing out the news but they wont profit from me by watching them.. and to think I was a "Neilson Family" in the 80's and had a hand written tv diary for like $10/month survey payment income... wow times have changed.

To be clear, I have 2 gen 1 cubes and a gen 2. I would try a new one, but $61 for a used one is about $10 more than the walmart one with twice the storage new. I keep the gen 1's because they dont run out of space. but yea slow..

Most folks do not know, but that "local" channel adds on to your dish, DirecTV, comrap, ie any cable company.. pays $30+ for local re-transmission rights. Most networks tv programing shows up on the networks web services the next day at ( PARAMOUNT, PEACOCK, AND HULU).

A antenna is the slick deal (antenaweb dot org).

If you cant do that, pluto has the local news for a lot of folks.

I may be the minority here but I really don't mind the ads at all. Of course, I've turned off the video ones but the other ones, I'm totally fine with. In fact, these days I look out for the ones which pay free prime movie credits. I use it to buy many movies on my watch list.

There are other alternatives besides fire TV and Apple TV. You're acting like it's a binary choice. It's perfectly reasonable for people to complain about ads though. We're in a consumer economy. I don't use Apple TV and I liked my fire cube for a long time but it boot looped at one point and I don't think I'm going to replace it but another fire cube. I'll probably go to an ONN Android box or something.

The fire cube was perfectly fine but it's more intrusive, third party launchers that can avoid the ads don't work as well. And Amazon is moving away from Android OS is which will eliminate side loading as an option in the future, although probably not with this particular piece of hardware

Yes. I have side loaded Cody on any Android, TV or fire TV. Although Amazon is eventually moving away from Android as the OS for their fire TV, but I don't think that would be an issue on this piece of hardware. But eventually in the next couple years the new hardware won't allow side loading

But absolutely you can download Kodi. You can do it on an Android TV , Chromecast TV or a fire TV. Probably in Nvidia shield as well. I think that's working on Android but someone can correct me if I'm wrong

PSA: If you have an AVR, do not buy one of these. The audio subsystem is borked and Amazon doesn't seem interested in fixing it. You can choose either the Dolby Digital Plus and lose out on Atmos or the "Best Available" and get Atmos but no other surround formats. However many years on and still nothing can beat the Shield for audio enthusiasts.

I honestly rather doubt that. Their new OS is likely for their Echo lineup where it's a fixed embedded platform. There's no way they'd try to pull an Apple and kick everyone in the teeth by making all the apps in their app store completely useless on the new devices. But since their Echo lineup doesn't have an app store, it'd be a quick and easy migration.

The big difference is the CPU/GPU and Ethernet if you like the extra latency. It's quite painful to open apps on the firestick and the load times take longer. The cube is a lot faster and can also have a lot more apps running. It's really a good device. I have the older model and am thinking of getting the newer one for the wifi6e.
If it is important to you (it happens to be for me) the fire cube supports zoom, the fire stick does not.

FYI, a few years ago Nvidia issued a warning about using USB drives with the Shield and removed all "recommended" drives from their website since they realized there were some overheating issues and it could be a fire hazard. You might want to consider moving to a small external HDD instead.
