To add to this, fireOS has been getting progressively worse as time goes by. They are being more intrusive with ads and locking the system down. If you have any desire to customize anything I'd steer clear. The new Onn 4k Pro unit seems to be much more open for now. It may not have the same processor , but it operates smooth and has 32GB storage on board with a USB port for expansion. Plus the Onn unit is only $49.99 at wally world.

I was just going to ask about the FireStick 4k Max comparison.

What are the practical differences between the sticks and the cubes?

Idk why people complain about ads too much. It's Amazon we are talking about. You either pay more and go with Apple TV (no sideloading) and have no ads, or pay dirt cheap and deal with Amazon. I personally have no issues with Amazon Home Screen. Once you disable the auto play, it becomes a static image. And sometimes those are just suggestions, not even ads. I find them useful when I am in need of a new movie or tv show.

This is the most powerful Fire TV you can buy and it has 16gb of storage. It has speakers and microphones built-in, plus you get HDMI in port. It's super easy to sideload apps. Let me add two more things, if you like Fire TV, this is the only model with AI upscaling and 16gb of storage.

It's not for everyone, but I certainly enjoy Fire TVs!

How is the performance compared to gen2? On paper, it's faster, but I'm wondering about real world performance. We've had gen2 since it came out. Works well overall but the microphone doesn't always pick up commands.

I've had all iterations of the Amazon Fire TV Stick and Have the Fire TV Cube 2nd Gen.

I still use the Fire TV Cube. Sideloaded Kodi. Bought the adapter for Ethernet and external storage.

I don't have many apps installed, just the major streaming services like Netflix, Paramount, Max, Hulu, Disney, Tubi, and a fitness app. And the aforementioned Kodi.

Hated the Firesticks because the storage would, for some reason fill up and you'd get the dreaded Low Storage warning, which then cripples the Stick.

So got the Fire Cube for the storage and better hardware. 12gb of storage… you'd think that was plenty… nope… kept getting Low Storage warning after a while. Clearing Cache would help temporarily. But why was it using so much storage?

Bought an adapter for Ethernet connectivity and 120gb External Storage. Ethernet is limited to about 300mb/s due to the limitations of the Micro USB port. Offloaded Kodi and whatever apps to the USB drive… and I would STILL get Low Storage warnings. For some reason the Cache from Kodi would still be stored in the Fire Cube… PAINFUL

I like the Cube EXCEPT for the dam storage issues. I would've replaced it with an Apple TV 4K, like I did with all the othe Fire Sticks… but I still have it for Kodi.

If it didn't sideload Kodi, it too would've been replaced with an Apple TV 4K

Not sure why all Apple TV 4K hate… yes it's pricey… but they just work. Navigating is fast and NEVER slows down, UI is simple and easy to use. NO ADS. You can use your iPhone as a remote. Has a Gigabit Ethernet port so wired speeds are close to 1gb/s.

If Kodi were available for the Apple TV 4K, I would hands down replace the Fire Cube. But I'll keep the Cube around for that.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the Cube, just can't stand how internal storage fills up and why does it actually fill up. The Apple TV 4K is just on another level as far as speed and simplicity.

And yes I've tried the others… ONN, Roku, Peacock TV box. And I use to have silent 1080p HTPC's with Kodi for all my TV's/Projector. They weren't worth upgrading when Atmos and 4K video came out.

What really excites me about this deal is the "Hands-Free" Alexa feature. My old Alexa is a manual version and its a real pain! In for one! :-)

If you have a 2nd gen Cube, try this - https://xdaforums.com/t/usb-boota...n.4616307/

This is CoreElec, ie Kodi and will give you a device that does full bitstreaming of all HD audio, runs faster than a Shield, and has the old Amazon UI without any ads.

Not sure why you have storage issues, I also have gen 2 fire cube and have all the same apps loaded except replace your kodi with stremio and add peakcock, disney, apple tv, nordvpn, blockada. Absolutely zero storage issues on my cubes - I have two and both are loaded up the same way. I only recently deleted most of the other apps since stremio has everything I need now. But before that no issues at all. Maybe it is the kodi and the add-ons?

PSA: If you have an AVR, do not buy one of these. The audio subsystem is borked and Amazon doesn't seem interested in fixing it. You can choose either the Dolby Digital Plus and lose out on Atmos or the "Best Available" and get Atmos but no other surround formats. However many years on and still nothing can beat the Shield for audio enthusiasts.
It is true the audio settings are a bit of a mess in fireOS and the DD+ vs Best Available is highly annoying for audio purists.

Having said that, the device can play back every major audio format the Shield can in Kodi including lossless TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. In Plex and Emby the only difference is DTS-HD is passed through as DTS Core. But on top of the Shield you gain AV1/VP9.2 for YouTube HDR, HDR10+ for Samsung and other TVs, and AC-4 audio. The only thing this device can't do is play back Dolby Vision Profile 7 but Kodi has a setting to convert this to Profile 8 on the fly. Neither of them can do profile 7 FEL.

Also the Homatics 4K Box R Plus, Nokia 8110, and Rocktek G2 will all have audio passthrough parity with the Shield with the coming Android 12 update which is in beta on the Homatics now.

IMO there is no reason to spend $200 on a Shield in 2024.

It will be years before they even attempt anything like that. If they did try to kill of previous android FireTV no one would by there new version
I believe that you're wrong about no one buying the new version (no matter what they attempt to do). However, it seems inevitable that they'll be employing the new OS only in a new line of devices. They can't magically transform the older devices, and they wouldn't render them obsolete either.
Eventually, everyone who's addicted to the "latest and greatest" will upgrade (or unknowingly downgrade, depending upon whether it's advantageous or not).

Are there any Home Automation Experts? I have a son with Cerebral Palsy, he CAN speak but not in a way that Alexa is able to decipher. I tried like heck....I have some buttons that I can make work with the Fire TV Cube, but I need some commands, or apps that work.

He mostly watches YouTube. He loves watching Planes take off, or watching Haircuts and a few other things.

I'd love to be able to have him press a button that will open YouTube and maybe Auto Play a playlist, or something similar. Has anyone messed with this?

The thing that makes the cube unique is that it can control your other devices and has macro capabilities (like a Harmony remote) built in. The system can be sideloaded also. I have one simple remote that can control my AV media center easily.

It's more than likely the Kodi app. For some reason, the Cache is saved on the Internal storage and not the external storage. So any saved favorites or links get cached to the Cube and not to the USB drive

I have the basically the same apps you do.

Hello, do you have your device connected via HDMI? If so you can enable HDMI CEC on both the Fire device and tv. This means that both will now turn on/off with a single remote, also with voice. e.g. you can say 'Alexa turn on fire tv and it will turn on both. or just hit power button on the remote for fire cube/stick and same thing.

You can also install SmartTube app (it is free and removes ads) or just use regular youtube app. and these can be put into the favorite apps and also be started with voice. I think Amazon has made it very hard to replace the launcher otherwise it would be possible to just start that automatically. But someone else who knows more can probably help. If you wish, I would also suggest you ask over on XDA - https://xdaforums.com/f/fire-tv-q...ting.3080/ - there are experts there.

I think there may be easier ways to do this also with a cheaper device live Walmart Onn, which allows you to remap the remote buttons, then you can simply program one button to launch his favorite playlist, or at leat youtube app. and the same benefits of CEC will work.

Wish you and your son all the best!

Badazz Media Center or BMC is a kodi fork that is maintained and doesn't take up alot of memory. I have an old fire TV box, 1st gen 4k Firestick and up to a max and all run fine with BMC and all the apps with no storage warnings.

With HDMI CEC those Harmony remotes are basically redundant, unless you need to use serial IR.

Try saving links to a favorites folder… guaranteed the cache will start filling the more links you save to the favorites.

It's not so much the size of the Kodi app… it's the cached files. And not sure why the cached files are so big. I use to boot Kodi off a 2gb USB drive on 3 different HTPC's. They had no hard drives, just the USB drives. Never had the issues with these huge Cached files.
