This is an extremely good price, I imagine newegg is trying to clear out stock before the release of zen5 cpus at the end of July. The fact the 7900x3d is in an awkward spot in amd's product stack also probably plays a role. The 7900x non-3d is usually ~$350 on sale from online retailers, and the 7800x3d never goes below ~$320. I'm almost wondering if this is a minor price mistake where someone at newegg messed up and added an extra 0 to the coupon code's discount, the prior coupon code was $5 off.

The 7900x3d is slightly slower than the 7900x in multithreaded/productivity performance (due to the 3d vcache ccd being lower clocked). It is also slightly slower than the 7800x3d (and 7950x3d) in gaming, the 7800x3d is ~7% faster in gaming at 1080p with a 4090. The 7900x3d has two 6-core ccd with only one ccd having 3d vcache, therefore while gaming the non-vcache ccd is "parked". That means the 7900x3d is functionally a 6-core "7600x3d" for gaming (though the other ccd can be activated if the game needs more than 6 cores). The parking function is handled by a specialized chipset driver that interfaces with microsoft's xbox game bar. This initially had some issues, though it's become far more reliable over time.
Here's the gamers nexus review of the 7900x3d, pay attention primarily to the productivity benchmarks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA1LvwZYxCM
And here's the more recent hardware unboxed gaming comparison for the 7900x3d: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu12QOQiUUI

Ultimately, this cpu is an exceptionally good value at $279. It's basically a slightly worse in gaming 7800x3d (the 7800x3d is ~7% faster in gaming at 1080p with a 4090) with 50% more cores (when not gaming) on sale for substantially cheaper than the 7800x3d ever goes on sale for from online retailers. It's also substantially cheaper than the 7900x while being quite close in productivity performance and significantly better in gaming performance. In comparison to intel cpus, it's basically a slightly faster in gaming 13700k with slightly worse productivity performance, vastly superior power efficiency, and a meaningful upgrade path on the am5 platform.

You can also combine this with newegg's combo savings: https://www.newegg.com/tools/combo-builder/4188
For $501.98 total you can get the 7900X3D, GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX motherboard, and Team T-Force Delta RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 6400 CL32 (FF3D532G6400HC32ADC01) ram (using hynix memory chips). Of course, you can also sub out a different motherboard if you prefer something higher end (or even get the cheaper micro-atx board if you won't be taking full advantage of this cpu), or sub out for the slightly more expensive Team T-Force Delta RGB DDR5 6000 CL30 (FF3D532G6000HC30DC01) memory if you don't want to mess around with the memory and/or fabric clock settings manually.

Is this at a "buy now, think later" point?

Oh god this cpu price is tanking. If the 7800x3d price does not drop below $320 in the near future, this is the better CPU on value for just gaming. Even better if you want productivity.

edit: Just want to add that there is a MASSIVE circlejerk around the 7800x3d. People will keep saying that it and the 5800x3d is what gamers should get but that's based on their launch prices. 7900x3d was awful at the asking price of 33% more (I think) than the 7800x3d. 7900x3d based on the comment above is 7% slower than the 7800x3d for 12% or so less money based on the 7800x3d's historical low (without zip pay or whatever). You won't even notice the whole 7% since you will most likely be GPU bound. And the 7900x3d beats the 7800x3d on non-gaming. People also tout that the 7950x3d as worse than the 7800x3d in raw performance, which is technically true but the difference isn't worth acknowledging with how small it is since AMD alleviated (not 100% fixed I don't think) the core scheduling issues. The 7800x3d deserved the praise it got when it released but recently, the value proposition isn't that great vs alternatives and vs 9000 series coming out soon. I can't really trust anyone's opinion that just screams about the 7800x3d blindly as they are just parotting advice without knowing why that advice was given out in the first place. AMD CPU deal thread seems absolutely infested with these people, I'm just going to not bother clicking on the deals anymore.

Man if I wasn't content on AM4... This is tempting. But would have to buy a new board and new RAM. I still feel like the better value is going with like 5700x3D to upgrade my AM4 rig and using the extra $360 I would have spent on this and get an RX 6800 or something.

The deals keep getting better but I just don't need it!

I would be much better served by waiting for the 16% improvement than "upgrading" to this.

But I almost checked out this time.

I almost*** bought it earlier because I figured it was a pricing mistake, but still have the problem of having to upgrade to AM5 board and RAM.
