I don't do pronouns, but will try to accommodate nicknames. I went by a common combination of first initial and middle name nickname k-12 school until college. (My cousin during summer visits couldn't pronounce my first name and my mother told him to just call me that.)
Unlike today's youth, I didn't swap my nickname every couple of years though. Or demand the school install booths for the urinals. Then leave the school and go back to being the name gender you were born as.
She definitely seemed healthier for doing so. I never saw her smile once in two years I knew her at the old school with the nickname. It was almost like a burden was lifted when she went back to being a girl again.
Pretending every day must be exhausting and why she felt angry and scowled all the time before.
At the new school she was pleasant if not bubbly, smiled often, grew her hair out, went by her birth name on the roster proudly and was respectful to her teachers and the American flag.
In a way what was old for her became new again. So, nicknames are still a thing; they just go by a different name now.
